• The art of Lorenzo is distinguished by its masterful
impasto technique, his eye for warm, clashing
colors, and the sure strokes of Lorenzo’s his brush
that do not conceal their tracks. The practice of one’s
art should be reward in itself; the paintings of
Diosdado exude a kind of exuberance in their
making that must have been solace for the artist at a
time when modernism was a form of rebellion.

MASTERPIECE
Mother and Child
The mother and child is rendered from combined
touches of burnt amber, sienna, vermilion,
crimson and bluish greens. On the dress of the
mother and shirt of the child, all hues are
moderated by generous yet varying amounts of
white to create tints. Otherwise, they are mixed
with a dash of respective complimentary colors to
modulate intensities. It is with the use of the same
intensities of colors that Lorenzo brings out the
warm, heartfelt humanism of the subjects.

Macabebe, Pampanga on January 22,

BIOGRAPHY/ ART WORKS
• The noteworthiness of this watercolor
TREE’S, 1976 composition is apparent in the utter lucidity,
unhesitating strokes, and clear images of the
countryside — a hut and a leafless tree, and
a copse of greens at the back — set against
the earthy luminosity of the near sepia
background color, serene and luminous
countryside. With the wet on wet qualities of
watercolor, he became interested in depicting
broad masses of light and shade and less
interested in the details and fidelity to
appearance.
• Manansala’s handling of watercolor, his
apparent preference for the wet technique —
wetting the paper as to produce seemingly
accidental, bleeding effects — and the
summary statement of images, indicates a
concern for balance between a painting’s
mood and mode.
Barong-barong,1910-1981

the dwellings themselves. It does not mean that
Manansala did not subscribe to the social
consciousness aesthetic; the artist is famous for his
abiding sympathy for common folk like beggars
and vendors. Occasionally, he would indulge in the
inequalities between rich and poor. In barong-
barong, however, the subject is underplayed in
favor of composition and design.
NUDE, 1948
• The nude figure has become an embodiment of
classical beauty and ideal form. Beyond this, the
technical aspect of such would pose a challenge for
some artists — as there is always a level of
difficulty in capturing the human anatomy; be it
stylistic or academic. A technically proficient
draughtsman, Vicente Manansala captures the nude
form very elegantly. Clever with his use of light, and
impeccable with his technicality, the national artist
depicts the sheer beauty of his subject fluently,
infusing his own cubistic touch ever so subtly. This
work by the renowned modern from 1972 is a
masterful display of the artists’ skill and finesse.

• Demetrio Diego’s “Carabao Race” shows
the racing of the water buffalo
(Bubalusbubalis) as part of the many
rural celebrations in the Philippines.
Often, these races are held on the month
of May, in honor of Saint Isidore (San
Isidro, 1082-1172) who is the patron
saint of farmers, as well as in celebration
of the May harvests of the rice fields.
Some races are held on other months,
depending on the patron saint of the
town.
