IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING WORD WALL MEDIA AT THE SECOND GRADE

OF SMAN 1 POLI-POLIA

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter tells about the background of the research, question of the research, objective of
the research, the significance of the research, scope of the research and definition of terms.

1.1 Background of the Research


The basic function of language is to communicate, so language means as a
tool of communication in human life. It is important to be learned in order to
improve the quality of the social life. In Indonesia, English has been determined as
the foreign language as stated in the 1994 national curriculum. The purpose of
learning English in Indonesia according to the National curriculum is to enable
learners to speak and written in English.
The latest National Curriculum is K.13 Curriculum . In order to enable
students to communicate well in English, they must be able to speak very well.
They are also required to read and write well in English. To achieve these aims,
students must master a large number of vocabularies. They will be able to
conceive what they have heard and read.
Teaching vocabulary is one of the basic elements in achieving all four
language skills. Similarly, Jordan in Decy (2013) also states that teaching vocabulary
is such an important task in teaching English because vocabulary
Based on preliminary research held in June 9th, 2019 with the English teacher
of SMAN 1 POLI-POLIA, the researcher found that the students’ vocabulary
mastery was low. From the result of the interview, the teacher said that, the
students were still low in vocabulary, they difficult to remember the words,
uninterested in teaching and learning process, this matter is proved with the
average value of the students’ result in final semester of English that was 55,
while KKM of English at the school was 72.
The researcher decided to improve students’ vocabulary achievement
or to solve the students’ problem by using good media. Media is important in
teaching and learning activity since it can help to clarify the teacher’s
explanation. In this case, the researcher chooses word wall media as media in
teaching vocabulary to improve the students’ knowledge of vocabulary.
The researcher assumed that words wall media can give contribution in
teaching English, especially to students’ vocabulary achievement focusing on
their improvement. Based on the reason above, the researcher intends to
investigate the process of teaching vocabulary under word wall media, which
untitled “Improving students’ vocabulary mastery by using word wall at the
second grade of SMAN 1 Poli-Polia”.
1.2 Question of the Research

• Based on the background before, the research


question is: “How can word wall media
improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the
second grade of SMAN 1 Poli-Polia in each
cycle?”
1.3 Objective of the Research

The objective of the research are as follows:


• Generally, the objective of the research is to
describe students’ vocabulary mastery by
using word wall.
• Specifically, the research is to improve the
students’ vocabulary mastery in each cycle of
the second grade students of SMAN 1 Poli-
Polia.
1.4 Significance of the Research

The significancess of the research are as follow:


• Theorytically, the significance of the research is to enrich
method of teaching in Indonesia.
• Practically, the ssignificances of the research was as
follows:
• For the teacher, the result of the research word wall
becomes the media of teaching.
• For the student, Students’ vocabulary achievement can be
improved by using word wall.
• For the school, can be a better school than before.
• For the further researcher, can be a reference in conducting
the research.
1.6 Definition of Terms

To avoid misunderstanding of the title of this research, thus


the researcher defines some technical terms are as follows:
• Improving means to increase in value, excellence, etc.

• Vocabulary as a list of collection of the words or phrases of
language branch of science usually arranged in alphabetical
order and defined. Corp in Retno (2012)
• Word wall is a systematically organized collection of words
displayed in larger letters on a wall or other large display
place in the classroom. Cunningham in Surni (2011)
• Achievement is the act of accomplishing or finishing. Collins
in Retno (2012)
CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter dealed some previous research, definition of vocabulary, the importance
of vocabulary, types of vocabulary, Concept of Teaching Vocabulary, teaching
vocabulary by using word wall media, the procedures of teaching vocabulary by using
words wall and conceptual framework.

• 2.1 Some Previous Research


Below are some previous researches findings about teaching vocabulary by using
pictures.
• Retno (2012) in her research, teaching vocabulary by word wall can improve the
students’ vocabulary achievement and the students were actively involved in the
teaching and learning process.
• Rezky (2013) Says that teaching vocabulary through picture can motivate
students’ interest toward the subject. Besides that, it has some advantages such
as: it can be obtained somewhere and it inexpensive.
2.2 Definition of Vocabulary

According to Hornby (1995), vocabulary is (a)


the total number of word in a language. (b) All
the words known to a person or used in
particular book, subject, etc. (c) a list of words
their meanings, especially one that
accompanies a textbook in foreign language.
