WHAT IS AN EMBEDDED SYSTEM ?

 We can say that it is “A combination of computer hardware and software, and perhaps
additional mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a dedicated function .In some
cases, embedded systems are part of a larger system or product, as is the case of an antilock
braking system in a car”.
 An embedded system is a special –purpose computer system designed to perform certain
dedicated functions. It is usually embedded as part of a complete device including hardware
and mechanical parts.
 Contains processing cores that are either micro-controllers or digital signal processors.
 An embedded system is designed to run on its own without human intervention, and may be
required to respond to events in real time.
EXAMPLES OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
Embedded systems span all aspects of modern life and there are
many examples of their use:
 Biomedical Instrumentation-ECG recorder, Blood cell
recorder, patient monitor system.

 Communication system-Cellular phones, cable TV terminals,

Video games.

 Peripheral controllers of a computer-Keyboard controller,

DMA controller, LAN controller, disk drive controller
EXAMPLES OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM
 Industrial Instrumentation- Process controller, DC
motor controller, CNC machine controller, robotic
systems, and so on.

 Scientific-Digital storage system, CRT display

controller, Spectrum analyser.
COMPONENTS OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM
Processors
• It is the central processing unit known as the heart of the embedded systems.
• It is the hardware that executes the software and brings life to the embedded system.
• Controls the activities of all the other circuits.

Memory
• Used to store the software that the processor will run.
• Also provides storage for data such as program variables , intermediate results, status
information and any other data generated throughout the operation.

Real Time Operating System(RTOS)

• RTOS defines the way the system work. Which supervise the application software. It sets
the rules during the execution of the application program.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM
 Small Scale Embedded System

 Medium Scale Embedded System

 Sophisticated Embedded System

SMALL SCALE EMBEDDED SYSTEM
 Single 8 bit or 16 bit Microcontroller.

 Little hardware and Software complexity.

 They may even be battery operated.

 Usually “C” is used for developing these system.

 The need to limit power dissipation when system is running continuously.

MEDIUM SCALE EMBEDDED SYSTEM
 Single or few 16 or 32 bit microcontrollers or digital single processors (DSP)
or reduced Instructions set Computers(RISC).

 Both hardware and software complexity.

SOPHISTICATED EMBEDDED SYSTEM

 Enormous hardware and software complexity.

 Which may need Scalable processor or configurable processor and

programming logic arrays.

 Constrained by the processing speed available in their hardware units.
