WHAT IS SENTENCE?
a set of words that is complete in itself, typically
containing a subject and predicate, conveying a
statement, question, exclamation, or command,
and consisting of a main clause and sometimes
one or more subordinate clauses.
“ THE 4 BASIC PARTS OF A SENTENCE”

• 1. Simple Sentence
• - it has basic elements that makes a single word to be a sentence.
• Ex:
• Joe, waited for the train.
• The train was late.
• I looked for Mary and Samantha, at the bus station.
• 2. Compound Sentence
• - it refers to a sentence made up of 2 independent clauses or
complete sentences connected to one another with
coordinating conjunctions.
• E.g.
• Joe, waited for a train but the train was late.
• Mary and Sam, left on the bus, before I arrived so, I did not see
them at the bus station.
• 3. Complex Sentence
• It has made of an independent clause, and 1 more dependent
clauses connected to it.
- Dependent clause is similar to an independent clause, or complete sentence, but
it lacks of one the elements, that would make it a complex sentence.

- E.g.
• Because my coffee was too cold I heated it in the microwave.
• Though he was very rich, he was still unhappy.
• She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged.

• 4. Compound-Complex Sentence
Compound-complex sentences are the most complicated sentences, like the name
implies. A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent
clauses and at least one dependent clause. In simple terms, an independent
clause can be a sentence on its own while a dependent clause cannot be a
complete sentence.
• E,g.
• Kate doesn’t like cartoons because they are loud, so she
doesn’t watch them.
• The dog started barking so the cat ran away and I
couldn’t keep up, so I stopped.
• Parts of a compound Complex Sentence
• a) independent clause
• -An independent clause will always be able to stand on its own as a
complete sentence. That means it has a subject and a predicate.
The subject of the clause will be a noun and the predicate will
describe the subject or what the subject is doing.
• The independent clauses in a compound-complex sentence are called coordinate.
• B)dependent clause
•The dependent clauses in compound-complex
sentences will not be complete sentences on their
own. They are dependent on the other clauses of the
sentence, because they don’t have a full meaning
without more information. Even though dependent
clauses have a subject and a predicate like
independent clauses, dependent clauses don’t
express a full thought.
