which result in effective or superior performance. It

given job into its constituent tasks or activities
and identifying the competencies needed to
perform the job successfully and smoothly.

• It is about identifying the preferred behavior

and personal skills which distinguish excellent
and outstanding performance from the
average.
• Dreyfus & Athanasion developed a five stage

model of the process of acquisition of skill that

moves from effective performance of lower to

higher order thinking and skills

• Stage 1: The Novice

• Follows context free rules, with relevant

components of the situation defined for him.

Hence lacks any coherent sense of the overall

task.
• Stage 2: The advanced beginner

• Learner begins to recognize elements of their

task through practical experience in concrete

situations, they begin to perceive similarities

between new and previous experiences.

• Stage 3: The competent

• He begins to recognize a wide range of cues

and be able to select and focus upon the most
important of them. Their reliance upon rules
lessens, they experiment and go beyond the
rules using trial and error
• Stage 4: The proficient

• He achieves unconscious, fluid, effortless

performance. He thinks analytically and can
now read the evolving situation, picking up
new cues and becoming aware of emerging
patterns, he has an involved, intuitive and
holistic grasp of the situation.
• Stage 5: The expert

• Highly experienced people seems to be able to recognize

whole scenarios without decomposing them into elements
or separate features. He has a multi dimensional map of
the territory, he frames and reframes strategies as he reads
changing cues. With this intuitive understanding of the
implications of the situation, he can cope with uncertainty
and unforeseen situations
