HOLISTIC STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN FOR

PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

A STUDY OF GREATER HYDERABAD MUNICIPAL

CORPORATION
INTRODUCTION
• Telangana state government along with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on
world environment day 2018 pledged to make Hyderabad “single use plastic free city” by 2022
and focus to reduce use of plastics and enhance plastics recycling.
• In this context the current project namely, “Holistic waste management plan for Hyderabad –
with special focus on plastic waste management” is initiated through state government in
partnership with ICLEI – South Asia.
• The project is supported by United Nations Environment and the Institute for Global
Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan.

SCOPE OF WORK
• Working on the field, collecting data from the DRCCs, informal sector, recycling and
manufacturing industries to map the flow of dry waste in the city.
• Participating in ICLEI South Asia team‟s activities in raising awareness of citizens to segregate
waste.
• Providing support in channelization of non-recyclables throug identification and interaction with
waste recyclers
• Active involvement during any on-ground surveys being conducted related to waste
management activities
• Implementation of the pilot project for plastic waste management in Hyderabad
INTRODUCTION OF DRCC

Purpose of DRC centers:

• Dry waste collected by Swachh autos has a
huge potential as recyclable waste. They have
dual environmental and livelihood benefits.
• Not only is recycle and reuse a mantra for
future, Collecting and segregating this waste
can provide additional economic benefit to
waste collectors.
• Transfer stations wherein segregated waste is
brought by Swachh auto tippers, dry resource
centres can be facilitated at all these locations.
• ITC and Godrej are headed by these 30
DRC’s centres and also involved in intensive
segregating programme for dry resource and
sanitation programme. Map showing Transfer station and DRCC ’s given by GHMC

INDUSTRIAL SURVEY
INDUSTRIAL SURVEY
• In Hyderabad Kattedhan, Jeedimetla, Cherlapally and Peddha amberpet are four major areas dealing with recycling Industries.
• They mainly recycle PP,HDPE, LDPE, PET.
• visited 74 Plastic Industries in which Manufacturing industries are 14, recycling industries are 14. Shredding industries are 4
and rests 37 are not interested to give details.
• Manufacture Industries were using virgin granules from Reliance petrochemicals, GAIL petrochemicals and Haldia
petrochemicals.
• Reliance petrochemicals Supply granules from Gujarat.
• GAIL Petrochemicals from Uttar Pradesh and Haldia from west Bengal.
• Recycling Industries are mainly in Kattedhan, Jeedimetla, Cherlapally, and Peddha Amberpet.

Process of collection of Scrape and segregation

• Household sell their Scrape to kabadiwala’s or disposes to SAT vehicles which is collected by Municipal solid waste.
• Kabadiwala’s further sell to small retailers these small retailers segregate and sell to large agencies and these large
agencies further segregate and sell to Industries.
• The scrape which is disposed to SAT vehicles they segregate this scrape and sell to DRCC’s or Small Retailers. These
DRCC segregate further and sell to Large Retailer’s or Industries.
Recycling Technologies and process

• Polypropylene (PP): Visited 5 recycling PP industries the PP material used for recycle are plastic
bags (rice bags) this plastic bags are directly dump into recycling machine at a temperature of 200-
230.this melts the bags and converts into Flaking and cooled which forms into Granules. These
granules are selling to local Hyderabad and other states for manufacturing units like chair making,
soap boxes etc.

• Low-density polyethylene (LDPE): Visited 6 recycling LDPE industries the LDPE material used for recycle are
milk and water packets these packets are cut four sides and washed after washing it is kept drying for 4 to 6 hours and then
these material is dumped into recycling machine at a temperature of 130-160. This temperature starts melting the material
and a Liquid type of plastic is formed and then this are cut and formed into granules. These granules are selling to local
Hyderabad and Telangana for manufacturing units like pipe manufacturing shampoo bottles etc.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE): Visited 8 recycling HDPE industries the HDPE material used for
recycle are pipes, cover and jars. This HDPE is first segregated based on colour and it is shredded then
after it is washed and sends it into recycling machine where is it heated upto “if plastic bags it is 300-
340”” if Pipes or jars it is 200-240”.this forms a liquid type of substance and it is cooled and this liquid
substance is cut down in the machine and the final granules are formed. These granules are sold to
local Hyderabad and other states for manufacturing units like pipe manufacturing and polyethylene
bags etc

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET): Visited 3 PET industries the PET material used for recycle are
bottles. Firstly they are segregated based on colour and These bottles are kept on a moving belt this
belt takes to cutting machine where the neck of bottles are cut down and the these two are separated
the bottles are then shredded and make into chips and these chips are washed and sent to drying
machine where the material is dried and these material sends into a Melting machine where these is
heated and melted on a temperature of 100 this melted substance look like a liquid and these liquid
substance is sent to cooling machine where it is cooled and the substance is grinded into granules.
These granules are sold to local Hyderabad and Telangana for manufacturing units like Plastic
containers etc.
Multilayer:

Visited 1 Multilayer industries the multilayer material used for recycle are cover. Firstly they are loaded
into cutting machine where the are shredded and make into small rappers and sent to boilers where
material is boiled and formed as a sand form then that material further sends into a Melting machine
where these is heated and melted on a temperature of 70 this melted substance look like a lump. This
substance is collected. the collected material cool by pouring water on it manually. This material is then
cut into granules. These granules are sold to local Hyderabad and Telangana for manufacturing units
like Plastic chair and pipe industries etc.
Multilayer plastic is collected by large retailers and sold it to other cities like Bangalore, Delhi, and
Mumbai where these are used in cement manufacturing Industries.

Industries which are not visited are PVC, PS

Collection of waste by SAT Vehicle
at lower Tankbund.
• All the plastic waste is collected expect the LDPE
covers and multi-layer plastic.
• LDPE covers and multi-layer plastic are not
collected because it’s time taking process and it as
less value. Segregating of waste by SAT Vehicle
• Sell the segregated waste at Rajanagar near Raj
bhavan road where the entire scrape is purchase by
single dealer.
