TYPES OF SPEECH STYLES Martin Joos (1962) identified five formality levels of communication or speech styles according to - your relationship with the addressee - the topic being discussed; and - the occasion when the exchange takes place. The CONTEXT dictates the way people communicate, which results in various speech styles.
According to Joos (1968), there are
five speech styles: ▸Intimate ▸Casual ▸Consultative ▸Formal ▸Frozen INTIMATE STYLE • This is private, which occurs between or among close family members or intimate individuals. • The language used in this style may not be shared in public. • People speaking with intimate style may give meaning to certain words that only they know. HAVING A ONE-ON- ONE CONVERSATION WITH A LOVED ONE “ How different are the ways you talk to people in your family from the way you talk with your classmates? CASUAL STYLE ▸There is free and easy participation of both speaker and listener ▸It is marked by various degrees of implicitness because of intimacy between speaker and listener. CASUAL STYLE ▸This style is common among peers and friends. ▸The use of language is general. Jargon, slang, street words, gay language or vulgar words are used. ▸It is closely connected to social interaction as a function of communication, deepening friendships. TALKING AND LAUGHING ABOUT A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE “ How are friends able to talk to each other with incomplete sentences and fragments of speech? CONSULTATIVE STYLE ▸It is a conversational style in which the speaker constantly observes the listener’s verbal and nonverbal cues for feedback. ▸Professionally or mutually acceptable language (well-pronounced and careful use of words, complete sentences) is a must in this style. ▸It is the style used in talking to strangers. CONSULTATIVE STYLE Used in semi-formal communication situations where a transaction of some sort takes place Interaction that takes place has two features: one speaker supplies background information and he/she does not assume that he/she will be easily understood by the expert the addressee participates continuously. COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A TEACHER AND A PUPIL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A DOCTOR AND A PATIENT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A JUDGE AND A LAWYER “ How different are the ways you talk with people you just met? FORMAL STYLE ▸ This style is used in formal settings. ▸This is one-way compared to consultative style. ▸The speaker plans ahead and frames what he/she is to say before it is delivered. ▸There are two defining features of formal styles: modulated intonation cohesion and organization SERMON BY PRIESTS AND MINISTERS STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT FROZEN STYLE ▸ This style is basically “frozen” in time and remains unchanged. ▸ Also known as fixed speech ▸ It is most the most formal communicative style that is often used in respectful situations or formal ceremonies.
