The Nature of Micro&Macroskills

Speaking of Speaking
The Nature of Speaking
• Bailey (2003) : Speaking is harder than the other three
language skills because it occurs in real time and it is
impossible to edit and revise what you want to say, like in
writing.
• Van Lier (1995) : “Spoken language and written language
differ in many significant ways.”

Conversational Teaching
Strategies Conversation
Conversational Strategies (Harmer, 2007)
• Conversational Rules and Structure : Teaching the structure, the
expressions, the do’s and don’ts in a conversation, e.g.
- Opening (“Hi! How do you do?”)
- Maintaining: Interrupting (“Sorry to interrupt, but...”), topic shift (“...oh by
the way...”)
- Closing (“It’s been nice talking to you”)
• Survival and Repair Strategies : Teaching the steps and the ways to face
unexpected situations during a conversation:
- Ask for repetition ( “Pardon?”)  in case learners did not hear what other
people said
- Paraphrase (“It’s a kind of...”), and using certain phrases to explain
certain words (“You know, it’s a... What-d’you-call-it”)  in case you do
not know the English word for certain objects.
• Real talk : Involving learners in spontaneous face-to-face conversation outside
the classroom with good English language speakers.  Requires A LOT OF
EXPOSURE
Teaching Conversation (Richards, 2015)
• Awareness-raising activities:
“Find the expressions which express...”

• Dialogue completion:
X : “How are you?”
Y : .............

• Planning Tasks :
Situation 1
You are a tour guide, you want to introduce yourself and ask to your client (the
tourist) about his/her personal information.
• Improvizations :
