What Are Nouns ?
Definition Of Nouns :
A nouns is a part of speech, and part
of speech simply refer to types of
word, you may be familiar with a lot
of basic parts of speech, like nouns,
verbs, and adjectives. Nouns identify
people, places, things, and ideas.
Plural Forms of Nouns
(a) Baby-babies duty-duties landlady-landladies
in (a): The final –y is preceded by a
consonant; to make the plural
form, change the y to i and add es.
(Note: if –y is preceded by a vowel, add only
–s: toys, monkeys, valleys, days).
(b) Wife-wives-thief-thieves-shelf-shelves
If a noun ends in –fe or –f, the ending is
changed to –ves (except: beliefs, chiefs,
roofs, staffs).
(c) Dish-dishes-church-churches class- classes box-boxes
Add –es to nouns ending in –sh, -ch, -s, -z, and –x.
(Exceptions: monarchs, stomachs).
(d) Tomato-tomatoes hero-heroes mosquito-mosquitoes.
Add –es to nouns that end in –o (except: pianos, zoos,
radios)
(e) Analysis-analyses-basis-bases crisis-crises datum-data
bacterium-bacteria medium-media criterion-criteria
phenomenon-phenomena stimulus-stimuli nucleus-nuclei
radius-radii.
-is becomes -es
-um becomes -a
-on becomes -a
-us becomes -i
-a becomes -ae
-ex and –ix becomes -ices
Exercise : Give the plural forms of the words in
italics!
1. We are an auditor.
2. Some the departement store have a high tax.
3. An auditor have to do report a financial
report.
4. Fixed income is an income from a pension.

Remember!
*Work is used as a countable noun when it
means ‘’ a work of art’’; e.g, there are many
works of art in the museum. (compare: I have
some work to do tonight.)
** many food terms are used as countable nouns
when they they mean ‘’ a kind of’’; e.g., an
orange is a fruit . (compare: I had fruit for
dessert )
Exercise: many is used with countable nouns ; ‘ much’ is
used with uncountable noun. Complete the following
sentences by using ‘many’ or ‘much; and the correct
form of the noun in parentheses.
1. Unsri students don’t have (money).
2. Mr. sofendi hasn’t visited (city) in china.
3. Vien hasn’t gotten (mail) lately.
4. Suri can’t go with tomi because she hs too (work) to
do.
5. How (equipment) does a driver need ?
6. Rudi couldn’t find (information) in that book.
