CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of The Study

 Hiro as the main character of Big Hero 6 was chosen because

he is able to fulfill his needs after losing his older brother.
 According to Maslow, there are five stages of human needs,
they are:
1. Psychological needs
2. Safety needs
3. Love/belonging needs
4. Esteem needs
5. Self-actualization
Research Problem

1. How does Hiro fulfill all of his needs and which one is
dominant based on Maslow’s theory?
2. How is Hiro’s character based on his needs?
Purpose of the study

1. To see the needs that happened on Hiro life, the main

character of Big Hero 6, and which needs is more
dominant than the other need as he going through his
life.
2. To see how is Hiro character based on his needs that is
shown in Big Hero 6.
Significance of the study

Theoretically
This researched is hoped to give significance contribution
to the study about character along with Maslow’s
hierarchy needs
 Practically
This research hopefully can be the reading material for
those who want to do the similar research
Scope and Limitation of the study

Scope
The scope are around the conversation, action and
gestures between Hiro and other character that contain
certin needs based on Maslow’s Theory.
 Limitation
The limitation for this research was the most dominant
needs that can help the researcher explained about Hiro’s
character
Definition of Key Term

1. Movie
A series of moving pictures, often telling a story, usually show in a
theater or television.

object of this research
3.Hiro
Hiro is the main character from Big Hero 6 and was the subject of
this research
4.Maslow’s Hierarchy Needs
It is a theory that was being used in this research that consists of
five stages of human needs

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES
2.1 Literature
literature consist of films, drama, and even songs, it is
not only about poem, prose, or books
2.2 Film
According to Klarer, Film is predetermined by literary
techniques, conversely, literary practice developed
particular features under the impact of film (Klarer 55)
2.3 Character
One of the most important parts in literary work is
character. Character is a representation of a person,
animal, or figure in a literary work.
2.4 Characterization
Characterization is a literary device that an author uses
to reveal a character’s personality, such as appearance,
actions, dialogue, and motivation
According to Brittany Forbes (2013), characterization is
the process by which the writer reveals the personality
of a character
2.5 Maslow’s Hierarchy Needs
The hierarchy suggest that people are motivated to
fulfill their basic needs before moving to the other
higher needs. This theory often shows by a pyramid, to
help us understand the theory better.
2.5.1 Physiological Need
Physiological need is the most basic needs in Maslow’s hierarchy, it
contain the most basic needs of human life, such as:
 Air
 Food
 Drink
 Sleep
2.5.2 Safety Needs
Safety needs is the feeling of being safe, it is not only feeling the
safety from the environment but also:
 Personal security
 Financial security
 Health and well being
 Safety against incident
2.5.3 Love and Belonging
Love and Belonging needs is the needs that sometimes
human need the most, especially when they have problems.
The needs of Love and Belonging consist of:
 Friendship
 Intimacy
 Affection and love from work group, family, friends and
romantic relationship
2.5.4 Self Esteem
Self esteem needs consist of human desire to be accepted
and value by other people, human need to respect other
people and also being respected. It seems like human nature
to have the feeling of wanting to be seen by other people.
2.5.5 Self-Actualization
Self-actualization is needs at the top level of the hierarchy, this
needs said to be the hardest needs to be fulfill, because to achieve
this needs human being need to fullfill the four other needs first.
That means that in this level human try the best that they can be.
2.6 Previous research studies
There were several researches that have been analyzed using
Maslow’s hierarchy needs by Abraham Maslow. A thesis from
Shintya Dwi Fiedhawati (2013) from Brawijaya University,
“Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Manifested by The Main Character
in The Forest Gump The Movie.”
The different between Shintya and this research is the subject of the
research. Shintya used Forrest, the main character of Forrest Gump
the movie as her subject, whereas the researcher used Hiro the main
character of Big Hero 6 as her subject.

CHAPTHER METHOD
Research Design

This research will use qualitative method

The approach that will be used is objective approach
and descriptive approach
The last method that will be used is Library Research
Data and Source Data

The primary data will be the subtitle of the film and

the secondary data will be the research that have the
same theory with what was being used in this researc,
and also all the dialogue, action, and scene from the
subject, Hiro from Big Hero 6
Data collection

In this research, the researcher will use observation

method to observe the subject by watching film and
take note about the data that is related.
Data Analysis

The Analysis of the data for this research was being

implemented when all the theories and data could be
used to answer the research question
Procedure of Data Analysis

Watching the movie

Take notes
Collecting the data
Selecting the data
Applied the data
