SATELLITE IMAGING FOR RAIL

NAVIGATION

NAME-SAURABH KUMAR GUPTA (SIMRAN:A Real Time Tracking System)

GROUP-CE03
REG. NO.-20161030
INTRODUCTION-
SIMRAN Technology (a GPS based system) jointly executed
by IIT Kanpur and RDSO/Lucknow,enables passengers to
know the exact position of train by sending an SMS/GPRS.
The GPS device helps in tracking down the exact position
of train and also monitors the train speed.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:-

 SIMRAN was one among the 12 projects under Technology

Mission For Railway Safety(TMRS).

 The Project SIMRAN had started in April 2006 and has been
completed on 30th September 2009.

 Project SIMRAN under TMRS was sanctioned at an estimated

cost of Rs. 2.0 Crores.
Services Offered By SIMRAN:-

 It helps in locating trains through GPS, GSM and/or RF

tags without any manual interference.

 Project SIMRAN envisages dissemination of train running

information so collected
 to passengers at stations/in train through Passenger
Information Display Panels.
 to public/passengers through IVRS,SMS,Internet.
(source-internet)

Online Station Display Board has been installed at Patna Jn. Showing Online Running
Information of Patna boundTrains equipped with SIMRAN Train Equipment
ADOPTED TECHNOLOGY:-

 Locomotive Equipments developed under Trial Project have an

inbuilt GPS Receiver for collecting GPS Co-ordinates, Speed
and Time every second.
 Locomotive and Station Equipments do have inbuilt RF
Transceivers which operates at 2.4 GHz to exchange
information.
 Locomotive Equipments do have inbuilt GSM Module for
communicating the information so collected to Central Server.
 Coach Display Equipment equipped with 2.4 GHz RF
Transceivers receives information from Locomotive Equipment
pertaining to its Current Location, Current Speed, Time and
Time & Distant to reach Next Station and displays it inside
coaches.

 GPS Co-ordinates based Digital Map of all stations of Indian

Railway have been prepared.

 Under Project SIMRAN, a website www.simran.in have been

developed which is being used to monitor Real Time Tracking
of Trains equipped with Locomotive Equipment.
Salient Features of the Technology adopted:-
 Data Acquisition Process in fully Automatic, it does not
requires manual feeding of Train Running Information (Time
IN/Time Out) at Station, Control Office and NTES Terminals.
 Train Running Information will be communicated to Central
Server through Redundant Transmission Path. One is through
GPRS/SMS from Locomotive Equipment other is through Mobile
Satellite Services (MSS).
 Current train position can be displayed using Atlas Map,
Logical Map or in Tabular/Text form.
Byproducts of SIMRAN:-

1. Wireless Coach Display System(WCDS)

2. Unmanned Level Crossing Gates Warning

System(ULCGWS)

3. Gangmen Warning System(GWS)

1.Wireless Coach Display System(WCDS)
 At the start of journey, Train No. is to be entered only in Main
Equipment at Locomotive. Programming of route map for every
individual coach will not be required.
 Emergency communication from Control Office to individual
Coach can also be displayed.
 At the time of any Time Table change, Main Equipment will
automatically download required data from Central Server.
Individual Programming of each coaches will not be required.
 Successful Field Trial of Online Coach Display Board
integrated with SIMRAN System has also been conducted in
Gomati Express.
2.ULCGWS
• A project has been taken up with IIT-K to develop SIMRAN
based audio and visual warning system to road users at LC Gates.

• Warning to LC gate users shall be provided at

a fixed time before arrival of train.

• Warning at LC Gate will consist of Hooter and Flashing red light.

•The signal will change colour when the train is at 2000m from the
crossing and a hooter will blow when train is at 700m away from
level crossing.
3.GWS

Every year about 400 gangmen are run over by trains while
working the rail tracks. These deaths can be checked by using
GWS-a byproduct SIMRAN Technology.

 Warning to LC gate users and gang man shall be provided at

a fixed time before arrival of train.

 Warning to Gang man will consist of a portable Hooter to be kept

at the working site.
CONCLUSION:-

Despite of the various advantages and even after the successful

trial of the SIMRAN,Indian Railways had to shut down the project
in 2013 due to lack of funds.IIT Kanpur was told that there
involvement is no more needed in the project.
The institute, since it had the experience of operating
the technology could have helped Indian railways in an efficient
way to overcome the various obstructions that hinders the
growth of Indian Railways.
