BASIC Structure of an atom
“Sum It Up”

+ = ?
“Sum It Up”

+ = Electric
Charge
Electricity Charge
Objectives:
1. Identify electric charge of protons and
electrons
2. Explain the differences between
electrons and protons
3. Predict what happens when protons and
electrons interact with other protons
“Pic-Think-Share”

Protons Electrons
Electric Charge
- has two general types:
1.Positive
2.Negative
Electrons
smallest and lightest of the particles
in an atom
are in constant motion as they circle
around the nucleus of an atom
 it has a negative charge
Protons
Are much larger and heavier
than electrons
it has a positive electrical
charge
Like charge repel, unlike charge
attract
Electric Field between Two Opposite
Charges
The farther away the protons and
electrons from each other, the less
force their electric fields have on
each other. The closer they are to
each other, the more force they will
experienced from each other due to
electric field.
Activity: Repel or Attract
Direction: Based on your observation, write whether the following magnet instances
“repel” or “attract” each other.
1. ____________

2. ____________

3. ____________

4. ____________
Time Allotment: 5 minutes
Explain the differences
between electrons
and protons.
Electrons
smallest and lightest of the particles
in an atom
are in constant motion as they circle
around the nucleus of an atom
 it has a negative charge
Protons
Are much larger and heavier
than electrons
it has a positive electrical
charge
Based on the discussions and
activities done:
1. What happens when protons
interact with electrons?
2. Explain why an electron
(negatively charge particle) and
a proton (positively charge
particle) attracts each other?
3. How an electric charge is
produced?
An electrical charge is produced when an
atom loses or gains an electron. When there
are more electrons than protons, the charge is
negative. When there are fewer electrons than
protons, the charge is positive.
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer.

1. What is the smallest and

lightest particle in an atom?
a. Neutrons c. Protons
b. Electrons d. Nucleus
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer.

2. What is a particle in an atom that are

much heavier than electrons?
a. Proton c. Neutron
b. electron d. Nucleus
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer.

3. What is a particle that have a

negative electric charge?
a. nucleus c. protons
b. neutron d. electrons
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer.

4. What is a particle that have a

positive electric charge?
a. nucleus c. protons
b. neutron d. neutrons
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer.

5. Does two electrons will tend to

attract each other?
a. Yes c. Maybe
b. No d. None of the above
