CHE403: FINAL EXAM

INSTRUCTIONS
Provide a detailed solution for each problem and box your final answer. Follow the
format of your assignment. DEADLINE: FRIDAY until 5 PM.
QUESTION 1
Consider a U-tube filled with mercury
except the 18-cm-high portion at the top, as
shown in Fig. P3–128. The diameter of the
right arm of the U-tube is D " 2 cm, and the
diameter of the left arm is twice that. Oil
with a specific gravity of 2.72 is poured into
the left arm, forcing some mercury from the
left arm into the right one. Determine the
maximum amount of oil that can be added
into the left arm.
QUESTION 2
QUESTION 3
Block A has a thickness of 2.5 cm, blocks B and
C is 7.5 cm and block D is 5.0 cm. Blocks A and
D has a heating area of 1 square meter, kA = 150
W/ m - K, kB = 30, kC = 70 and kD = 50. Find the
heat transfer per unit area through he composite
B D
wall if the inner surface is 370℃ and the outer
A C
surface is 66 ℃ .
QUESTION 4
Air flows at 120℃ in a thin – wall stainless steel tube with h = 65 W/m2 - K. The
inside diameter of the tube is 2.5 cm and the wall thickness is 0.4 mm. k = 18
W/m – K for the steel. The tube is exposed to an environment with h = 6.5
W/m2 - K and temperature of air is 15 ℃. Calculate the overall heat transfer
coefficient and the heat loss per meter of length. What thickness of an insulation
having k = 40 mW/m – K should be added to reduce the heat loss by 90
percent?
QUESTION 4
Electric heater wires are installed in a solid wall having a thickness of 8 cm and
k = 2.5 W/m – K. The right face is exposed to an environment with h = 50 W/m2
- K and T = 30℃, while the left face is exposed to h = 75 W/m2 - K and T = 50
℃. What is the maximum allowable heat – generation such that the maximum
temperature in the solid does not exceed 300℃.
