 Recommendation of BUET on Structural
Assessment for Hospital Building, Sasakawa Part
 The facility (Hospital Building-Sasakawa Part) can be used for
the present usage pattern with a caution for the upper stories
until a DEA (Detailed Engineering Assessment) report
becomes available.
 The icddr,b should remain vigilant for the progressive
development of any secondary distress (if any)
 The Damaged/cracked partition wall need an immediate repair
for safety reasons until the recommendations of the DEA
report becomes available for implementation.
 The partition walls for the incomplete 7F may be erected after
the DEA recommendations become available.

 User can use the Hospital Building SASAKAWA part
with a caution and imposing no additional live
loads.

 The cracked brick wall should be repaired / replaced

by dry wall soon.

 We should write to BUET or other competent

authority to do the Detailed Engineering Assess-
ment of the Sasakawa and adjacent part without
further delay.

Assessment for IPH Building

 The IPH Building can be used with the present usage

pattern.

 However, the icddr,b should remain vigilant to identify

the development of any distress arising out of ageing
and weathering action.

 A time efficient inspection, repair and maintenance

scheme will be beneficial to keep this building
serviceable for a longer life cycle.

Building
 User can use IPH Building as before and recommen-
ded not to dump huge goods/documents both in the
1st and 2nd floors rooms and also in the internal
corridor.

 Periodical repair and maintenance should be

conducted specially painting of outer walls and
roof treatment.

 Expansion joint between the two wings should be

cleared and repaired.

Assessment for X-Library Building
 In view of the observations and findings, BRTC, BUET
consultants feels not to recommend the X-Library
Building for further use as it perhaps reached very near
to the end of its life cycle.
 Given the value of the land, the icddr,b may investigate
the possibility of re-planning the use of valuable land for
a better use.
 A planned demolition scheme may be undertaken with
all precautions to remove this underperformed structure.
 The demolition work shall comply with the Bangladesh
National Building Code (2006) requirements.

Building
 Entire Building should be demolished very soon.

 Demolition plan should be prepared.

 To facilitate the demolition works, equipment of

BSL-3 & 2 labs, Hospital store and freezers room at
the ground floor should be relocated.

 A committee should be formed for this relocation

and execute the demolition process .
