KASA

 Introduction :

 Kasa is an independent disease, a reflex, symptom or a


complication in which vayu dosha is expelled from the
pranavaha srotas through kantha & swaryantra.

 In this disease a sound loke Khaas is produced.

 It is seen as lakshana in many diseases.

 There will be kutsita shabda from the kanth called as


Kasa.
 Nidana :

 Dhoomopaghata ( inhalation of smoke, dust, amarasa in


nose or mouth )

 Vyayam
 Ruksha anna sevana

 Vimarga gatwa ( food particles entering the wrong


passage means trachea)

 Vegavarodhata kshavatho ( suppression of sneezing reflex)


 Samprapti :

 Above said nidana cause increase of prana & udana vata


which come out from the mouth suddenly producing a
sound resembling that coming out of a broken bronze
(kansya). This is called as Kasa.

 Vata dosha obstructed in its downward movement, begins


to move upwards & reaching the chest, invades the throat
& then filling the channels of the head and comes out of
the mouth producing noise resembling the sound of a
broken bellmade of broken bronze.
 Due to above said nidanas, the vayu dosha gets aggravated
and tends to move upwards invading the pranavaha
srotas.

 Thus aggravated dosha with vayu comes out forcefully out


through throat producing loud sound.

 There will be contraction of chest muscles, abdomen,


sides of neck, face, back, planks making the body bend
forward during the act of coughing.
 Samprapti ghataka :

 Dosha : vata pradhana tridosha


 Dushya : rasa
 Srotas : pranavaha
 Sroto dushti : vimarga gamana, sanga
 Udbhav sthana : amashaya
 Sanchara sthana : urah & shiras
 Vyakta sthana : kantha & mukha
 Rogmarga : abhyantara
 Poorva rupa :

 Shooka purna galasyata ( feeling of thorns pricking the


throat )
 Kanthe kandu ( itching sensation & irritation of throat )
 Bhojyanam avarodha ( obstruction to swallowing of food )

 Types :

1. Vataja
2. Pittaja
3. Kaphaja
4. Kshataja
5. Kshayaja
 Vataja kasa :

 Dry cough, dry throat, dry face


 Pain in the region of the heart, temples( shankh ), head,
abdomen, & flanks
 Kshinna bala (debility )
 Kheena swar ( feeble voice )
 Kheena ojas ( lack of enthusiasm )
 Prasakta vega ( continuous coughing )
 Bhinna swar ( hoarseness of voice )
 Shushka kasa ( cough without expectoration )
 Roma harsha ( horripilation )
 Pittaja kasa :

 Uro vidaha ( burning sensation in the chest )


 Jwar
 Mukha shosha ( dryness & bitter taste in the mouth )
 Trusha
 Pitta vaman ( yellowish & bitter vomittus )
 Pandu ( yellowish white skin )
 Paridaha ( burning sensation inside the body )
 Sputum is mucoid & associated with dushta pitta
 Loss of taste
 Kaphaja kasa :

 Pralipyamanen mukhen ( mouth full with thick saliva )


 Sidana ( weakness )
 Shrorujarta ( headache )
 Kapha purna deha ( accumulation of kapha all over body )
 Abhakta ruk ( anorexia )
 Gaurav
 Kandu ( irritation in the throat )
 Bhrusham kasa ( heavy cough )
 Sandra kapha ( thick cough, large in quantity, viscous,
dense, sticky, slimy cough )
 Kshataja kasa :

 When kasa is produced due to injury to the chest region


is called as kshataja kasa.
 Persons who are weak carrying heavy weights, walking
long distances, fighting with elephants, horses etc. get
injury to the chest and produced cough.
 The vayu fills the area of injury to produce pain.
 Dry cough followed by expectoration of blood mixed
sputum, pain in the throat & severe pain in the chest as
though pricked by needles or cutting pain, patient
resisting touch by others, pain in the joints, fever,
increased respiration, thirst, voice like that of pigeon will
manifest as symptoms in kshataja kasa.
 Kshayaja kasa :

 Indulgence in irregular & untimely meals, intake of


unwholesome food, excessive indulgence in sexual activity,
suppression of natural urges, too much of jealousy, grief
etc. cause increase of all the three doshas & agni
vaishmya.

 This will cause kshaya or depletion of body elements


leading of kshayaja kasa. It leads to wasting of all the
dhatus ( tissues ) of the body.

 The patient will suffer from pain all over the body, fever,
burning sensation, delusion, wasting & dryness of the
body, extreme weakness, coughs & brings out sputum
mixed with blood & pus.
 The patient tend to reduce body weight.

 There will be productive cough with sputum which has


foul smell, greenish & blood stained, mixed with pus,
mucopurulent in nature.

 The disease will run chronic & makes patient weak,


debilitated & emaciated.

 There will be recurrent onset of running nose, loss of


appetite, loose stool & broken voice due to chronic
coughing.

 This disease with all the symptoms is very hard to treat &
kills the very weak patient.
 Sadhyasadhyata :

 Sadhya :
 Vataja, pittaja & kaphaja kasa are SADHYA.
 Kasa is of recent onset is SADHYA.

 Yapya :
 Kasa started during old age or due to old age ( jara kasa )
is YAPYA.
 If the patient has good dehabala & has not undergone
deha kshaya then kshataja & kshayaja kasa are YAPYA.
 Asadhya :

 Kshayaja kasa is ASADHYA if there is deha kshaya of


ksheena manushya.
