 Astroviruses got their name because they
have a Star-like appearance when viewed
under a microscope.
 The virus has also been found in other
animals including dogs, birds, pigs, cows,
bats, and even dolphins.
 Infants and young children (under two years
of age) are most likely to have a diarrheal
illness caused by astroviruses.
 Less common than other infectious
pathogens that cause Diarrhea.
 Astroviruses accounts for 2 to 9 percent of
viral gastroenteritis cases in children around
the world.
 Have a characteristic Star-like
appearance in the center (Greek, Astron
meaning “star”)
 Distinctive 5 or 6 pointed star
 Non enveloped, positive-sense single-
stranded RNA viruses
 28 to 30 nm in diameter with a smooth
edge
 Astroviruses are one of several pathogens
that can cause Gastroenteritis in humans.
 The main symptom caused by astrovirus is
Diarrhea (lasts for 2 to 3 days)

 A person who gets sick may also have other

common symptoms of
Gastroenteritis, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Stomachache
- Loss of appetite
- Body aches
- Fever

 Astrovirus is most frequently transmitted
through a Fecal-Oral Route.
 Contaminated food, water, or fomites.
 Complications are rare and serious cases
are present in the patient, especially
infants and the elderly, it cannot replace
the fluids lost through vomiting and
diarrhea.
 Outbreaks tend to occur where children
are in close contact with one another (in
day-care centers, kindergarten, and
pediatric wards)
 Reverse Transcription PCR (RT-PCR)
 Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay
(ELISA)
 While there is NO CURE, and NO
VACCINE.
 Proper hand washing, especially after
using the bathroom.
 Not sharing eating utensils or drinking
cups.
 Avoiding the handling and preparation
of food during and when recovering
from illness.
 Carefully following directions when using
antiseptic or disinfectants on surfaces.
