 Regarding shear failure in self compacting concrete ,
most of the journals and papers focus on.

 Here we are going to focus on the variation of shear

failure in scc from confined reinforcement to un-
confined reinforcement.
 Experimental study has been carried to study the
variation of shear failure modes in reinforced concrete
beams.
 A total of about 18 beams were casted, of them 6 beams
are casted with minimum spacing of stirrups
 6 beams are casted with maximum spacing of stirrups
 6 beams are casted with varying shear span to depth
ratio from 0-5 to 3 (i.e 0.5, 1.0,1.5,2.0,2.5,3.0),which
were tested under two point loading configuration until
shear failure occur.
 All the beams were intentionally over-reinforced from
(1.45 to 2.72) in the shear span to depth ratios (1,2,3)
 Minimum and maximum spacing of stirrups are
calculated from is 456-2000
 Confined reinforcement are taken from the is 13920-
1993
 Finally after 28 days of curing, the scc beams were
evaluated based on the results of crack pattern,
deflection, shear cracking load, ultimate shear
resistance and failure mode
 Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete
that does not require vibration.

 It uses superplasticisers and stabilisers to significantly

increase the ease and rate of flow.

 It achieves compaction into every part of the mould or

formwork simply by means of its own weight without
any segregation of the coarse aggregate.
 Health and safety benefits (as no vibration is required).
 Faster construction times.
 Increased workability and ease of flow around heavy
reinforcement.
 Excellent durability.
 Cement = 346.7kg
 Sand = 835.6 kg
 Coarse aggregate= 800 kg (10 mm)
 G.G.BS =210.4 KG
 Super plasticizer = 2.8lit (Poly carboxylate ether)
 Water = 190 lit

Ratio for M30 grade scc is 1:1.49:1.43:0.34

 V-Funnel
 Slump flow

On testing the scc we get 9.5 sec for v-funnel test and
628.77mm for slump flow test
 shear failure occurs near supports.

 When the shear stress on an object exceeds the

maximum permissible shear stress, then the object
undergoes a failure known as shear failure.

 Shear failure can be easily determined by checking out

the excessive deflection or development of cracks,
which gives an advance warning about the probable
occurrence of shear failure.
 Since concrete is weak in tension, shear force creates
tensile stress at 45-degrees angle.

 Concrete beam that fails in shear will fail roughly at

45-degrees angle to the center-line of the beam.

 If shear force exceeds strength of concrete, we need to

add steel stirrups to provide shear reinforcement
 Compressive strength of cubes after 28 days
is 36.69 n/mm ²

 split tensile of cylinders after 28 days is yet

to obtain.
The dimensions of the beam are as follows:
Length of the beam=1.5m
Width of the beam =0.15m
Depth of the beam =0.225m

After calculating all the required no.of main

bars and stirrups the beams are designed as
