Traffic Congestion.
Congestion is one of the
most prevalent transport
problems in large urban
agglomerations,
WHAT IS TRAFFIC CONGESTION?
Congestion is the presence of delays along a
physical pathway due to the presence of
other users.
Congestion occurs when transport demand
exceeds transport supply at a specific point
in time and in a specific section of the
transport system.
MAJOR FORMS OF CONGESTION
Recurrent congestion. The consequence of factors
that cause regular demand surges on the
transportation system, such as commuting, shopping
or weekend trips.
MAJOR FORMS OF CONGESTION
Non-recurrent congestion. The other half of
congestion is caused by random events such as
accidents and unusual weather conditions (rain,
snowstorms, etc.), which are unexpected and
unplanned. Non-recurrent congestion is linked to the
presence and effectiveness of incident response
strategies.
UNDESIRABLE FORM OF CONGESTION
The kind that impedes travel between points, effectively adding
access costs to a desired destination.
The travel is not enjoyable; it is instead a necessary expenditure.
This form of congestion is a slowing of service.
