MATHOD OF CONCRETE DESIGN

MIX
M20 (ZONE 2)
WHAT IS DESIGN MIX?

It is the process of selecting suitable

ingredient of concrete and determining their
relative proportions with the object of
producing concrete of certain minimum
strength and durability as economically as
possible.
INTRODUCTION-

The mix design methods being used in different countries are mostly
based empirical relationships , charts and graphs developed from extensive
experimental investigations. Most of them follow the same basic principles
enunciated in Section 5 and only minor variations exist in different mix design
methods in the process of selecting the mix proportions. Some of the common mix
design methods for medium and high strength concretes are as follows-
They are: (a)The ACI Mix Design Method,
(b) The USBR Mix Design Practice,
(c) The British Mix Design Method
(d) The Mix Design Method according to Indian Standard
Recommended Guidelines for Concrete Mix Design.
The 'Indian Standard recommended guidelines for mix
design" includes design of normal concrete mixes (non-air
entrained), both for medium and high strength concrete. In
this method of mix design, the water content and proportion
of fine aggregate corresponding to a maximum size of
aggregate are first determined for reference values of
workability. Water cement ratio and grading of fine aggregate
. The water content and the proportion of fine aggregate are
then adjusted for any difference in workability, water-cement
ratio and grading of fine aggregate in any particular case from
the reference values. The batch weight of materials per unit
volume of concrete is finally calculated by the absolute
volume method.

CEMENT RATIO-
0.5 < 0.65
3- SELECTION OF WATER
AND CEMENT
CONTENT- For 20 mm
maximum nominal size of
aggregate & sand of zone 2
• Water content per m^3 of
concrete=186kg
• Sand content=35% of total
aggregate by volume
4-DETERMINATION OF
CEMENT CONTENT-
we know water cement
ration is 0.50 . Then the
quantity of cement will be
= 186/0.50
= 372 kg/m^3 (which is
greater the 220 kg/m^3)
# The w/c is also less than its
maximum value i.e. 0.07.
5-Determination of coarse • Coarse aggregate
& fine aggregate content-
content-
From Table 41 t for
the specified maximum size
of aggregate of 20 mm, the (1 – 0.02 )m^3
amount of entrapped air in =[186+372/3.15+1/0.35*f
the wet concrete is 2

percent.
fa=615.073kg/m^3
• Fine aggregate content -
For the same equation replacing
1/0.35 with 1/0.64 we will get
Ca=1142.27kg/m^3
THE MIXED PROPORTION THEN
BECOMES-

CEMENT-50KG
SAND-82.5KG
COARSE AGGREGATE -153.5KG
6) Water:
i) For water-cement ratio of 0.50,water =25.0 litres
ii) Extra water to be added for absorption in case of coarse aggregate, at 0.5 percent by
mass =0.5/100*153.5=(+ ) 0.7675 litres
iii) Water to be deducted for free moisture present in sand, at 2 percent by mass
=2/100*82.5= (-) 1.65 litres
litres
iv) Actual quantity of water to be added =25.0+0.7675-1.65=24.1175 litres
7) Sand:
Actual quantity of sand required after allowing for mass of free moisture = 82.5+ 1.65
= 84.15kg
8) Coarse aggregate:
Actual quantity of coarse aggregate required:
i) Fraction l = 92.1- 0.4605 =91.6395 kg
ii) Fraction l l =61.4-0.307=61.093kg
Therefore, the actual quantities of
different constituents required for the
mix are:
•water =24.1175kg
•cement = 50.00 kg
•Sand= 84.15kg
•Coarse aggregate:
•Fraction I =91.6395 kg
•Fraction II = 61.093kg
Coarse
aggregate water
Fraction II = =24.1175kg
61.093kg

Coarse
aggregate cement =
Fraction I 50.00 kg
=91.6395 kg

Sand= 84.15kg
