CVI, which occurs when the vein valves become dysfunctional and impairs
venous blood return, is an unrecognized disease which affects up to up to
20% of adults.
By the age of 50, 40% of women and 20% of men have significant vein
problems.
More people lose work time from vein disorders then from arterial disease!
Who is at risk ?
Family history of venous disease
Professions involving prolonged standing
Sedentary lifestyle
Obesity
Prior venous thrombosis (superficial or deep)
Pregnancy
Advancing age
Who needs testing?
Patients with following presentations:
Swelling /edema of the legs or ankles with no obvious
reason.
No relief after diuretics or recurrent ankle swelling
Varicose Veins
Aching, throbbing or a feeling of heaviness in legs on
standing or in evening after work
Color change in legs or ankles
Thickening of skin on legs or ankles (Stasis Dermatitis)
Ulcers
How is CVI tested?
Dedicated Venous Doppler Ultrasound is
diagnosis of choice for CVI/Venous Reflux. Studies
ordered for DVT in the hospitals do not evaluate
for reflux while in our Vein Program, ultrasound
study includes evaluation for DVT, Superficial
Thrombophlebitis & Venous Reflux involving
Deep veins, Superficial veins (GSV/SSV),
Perforators and Sphenofemoral Junction as a
comprehensive test for all common vein diseases.
Studies are performed by certified vascular
ultrasound specialists, with experience in
diagnosing Venous Reflux.
Treatments For CVI
Conservative Therapy for 3 months followed by reassessment of CVI
Conservative therapy include elevation of legs 3
times a day for 30 minutes. Patients are encouraged
to pursue regular exercise program & lose weight.
Depending upon degree of venous insufficiency
either over-the-counter compression stockings or
customized stocking are applied. Our vein
coordinators help patients to obtain stockings with
appropriate pressure settings.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Patients who show progressive symptomology despite conservative measures are
considered candidate for RFA
