THE BRAIN

 The brain is one complex part of our body system. It is said that all
functions of the human body are communicated by the brain.
z
Whole Brain Theory 

What is the Whole Brain Theory?

Scientist, medical doctors, psychologist, and psychiatrist have always been

fascinated with brain and how it works. Studies conducted on the brain offers
starts with attempt to understand a brain-related desease or malfunction.

“THE BRAIN DOMINANCE THEORY”

It was Ned Herrmann, who after Sperry made his own studies of the brain. According to
Herrmann people usually have a dominant part of the brain. However, According to him
also, there are 4 parts of the brain and not just 2 but they are connected with each
other.
z
“THE TRIUNE BRAIN THEORY”

 According to Dr. Paul MacLean the brain is divided into 3 parts,

The NEOCORTEX or Rational Brain -intellectual tasks

The LIMBIC SYSTEM or Intermediate Brain - motivation and emotion

involved in feeding, reproductive and parental behavior.

The REPTILIAN COMPLEX or Primitive brain - controls self-preservaton and

aggressive behavior of humans such as survival instinct.
z
According to Dr. Roger Sperry, the brain has 2 hemispheres
that performs the tasks differently with each other.

Ned Hermann: Founder Of

Hermann International

Hermann labeled the four quadrants of the brain as:

2. lower left (b) limbic mode - keyword for this quadrant is organized
3. upper right (c) cerebral mode - keyword for this quadrant is interpersonal
4. lower right (d) limbic mode - keyword for this quadrant is integrating

WHOLE BRAIN THEORY IN LEARNING

Quadrant A
learners are very much into logical thinking they enjoy analyzing information and
undersrand better when presented with numbers and quantities. However , they will find
it difficult to express their innerthoughts and emotions.

Quadrant B
learners easily grasp things in sequence, enjoy organizing ideas and things, assess
situation and information, and apply what they have learned into practice. Their big
challenges are in taking risks and doing things that are not clearly defined to them.

A and B are often characterized as practical, reality based and down to earth

What is MIND MAPPING?

 mind mapping is a graphical way to represent ideas and

concepts. It is a visual thinking tool that helps structuring
information, helping you to better analyze, comprehend,
synthesize, recall and generate new ideas.
z

 Mind Maps are useful visual tools that help in linking together
concepts and information in such a way that the interconnection
and interrelations of these are clearly laid out and easily
accessible to help in problem solving and for reference and
review

 Mind Maps are useful during brainstorming sessions, making

decisions, organizing information, simplifying complex ideas,
note taking, and even for personal use.
z
Five Essential Characteristics of
Mind Mapping:

1. The center image represents the main idea, subject, or focus

2. The main branches radiate from the centra image.

3. The branches compromise a key image or word drawn or

printed on its line.

4. Twigs represent the lesser topics.

5. The branches form a connected nodal structure.

z
Steps in Creating Basic Mind Maps:

1. Write the title of the subject you are exploring in the center of
the circle.
z

2. Draw lines out of the center circle to label major subject matters
about making presentatios, like: Audience, Topic, Visual Aids,
Locations and Delivery.
z

3. Draw additional lines that will connect To the lines for major
topics.
z
4. Then, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate
heading line and label them.

5. As you come across new information, link it in to the mind map

appropriately.
z
Using Mind Maps Effectively
The following suggestions can help you draw impactful Mind
Maps:

 Use Single Words or Simple Phrases

 Print Words

 Use Color to Separate Different Ideas

 Use Symbols and Images

 Use Cross-Linkages
