VISION OF FIRM

 Christopher Charles Benninger Architects is a laboratory of exploration and experimentation. We search and
research for solutions to our clients’ problems and aspirations. We analyse the parameters and factors that
define physical products, which are affordable, durable, functional, ecological and beautiful.

 The firm has always functioned as a studio, only taking up projects involving study, analysis and exploration of

CRISTOPHER BENNINGER
Professor Benninger, is widely regarded as one of India’s foremost creative architects and is respected as a leading urban and
regional planner. He has been registered with the Council of Architecture since 1976 and is a Fellow of both the Institute of Town
Planners, India and the Indian Institute of Architects. He is a member of the Regional Science Association, India, the Institute of
Indian Geographers, the Pune International Centre, the World Society of Ekistics, the American Planning Association, the American
Institute of Architects, and the India Habitat Centre. He is a PIO cardholder, and an Indian taxpayer. Professor Benninger first came
to India in the mid-sixties as a Fulbright Scholar to carry out research at Balkrishna Doshi’s School of Architecture

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS


In April 2010 Professor Benninger was awarded the Architect for the Decade Award his contribution to the profession of
architecture over that period. Over the past four years, on three occasions, the Indian Institute of Architects has honored him with
the award of Best Public Building of the Year for his designs of the Centre for Life Sciences, Health and Medicine, the YMCA
International Camp, Nilshi, India and for the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies. The design for Suzlon One Earth has been
CHRISTOPHER CHARLES BENNINGER honored by the Architects, Engineers, Surveyors Association of Pune as the Best Architectural Work in the City in 2009 and it was
recently named the Most Sustainable Building in India, in a national competition. It is a LEED Platinum and Five Star Teri Griha

The concept of the campus plan evolved from that of a mandala. It centers the plan of this diverse, micro cosmos, around an Architects
academic quadrangle with passages radiating out from it, offering points of encounter along the way, as well as views towards
the valleys in the distance and a series of interconnected, flowing spaces. Using the auspicious North-South axis to intersect the Anchor Award for Public Building Category

India House is a systematic


composition of three equal
sized volumes, with the
India House is conceptually derived from a traditional urban prototype called a haveli, or a Wada in Pune. Wadas form the middle volume left open as
urban fabric of Pune’s core, old city, where they enclose central courtyards, India House is a systematic composition of the atrium courtyard,
three equal sized volumes, with the middle volume left open as the atrium courtyard, admitting sunlight and breezes. This
atrium acts as the studio breakout space at for design teams, and an outdoor café for lunches, catalyzing communication
and interaction. Visiting student and professional groups meet here for discussions and lectures.

A lap pool in the courtyard and lotus pools in the promenade, cool the premises by creating a microclimate in the enclosed
spaces. The front main portal, or the Mahadwara, is an Eighteenth-Century wood door, salvaged from an ancient Moghul
haveli of north India. From this four-and-a-half-meter tall portal, with a small convenience door built into it, leading into
the atrium courtyard, one’s sightline is focused onto a large Shiva bust, sculpted in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
