THREE PERSPECTIVES ON

GLOBAL CULTURAL FLOW

GEC 103 Contemporary World

Prof. Bandoy
Group 4
GLOBALIZATION
Globalization is a process of interaction and integration
among the people, companies, and governments of
different nations, a process driven by international
trade and investment and aided by information
technology.
CRITICISM OF
GLOBALIZATION
Globalization has its proponents and its critics, today as well as in
the past. For instance, while some proponents say globalization
creates new markets and wealth, and promotes greater cultural and
social integration by eliminating barriers; critics blame the
elimination of barriers for undermining national policies and cultures
and destabilizing advanced labor markets in favor of lower-cost
wages elsewhere.
THREE PERSPECTIVES
ON GLOBAL CULTURAL
FLOW
• Differentialism
• Hybridization
• Convergence
DIFFERENTIALISM
• Cultural differences are immutable and generate rivalry and
conflict. Cultures fight when they clash.
• Cultural Differences culture is a way of describing the
combination of the various groups to which one belongs-
racial, ethnic, religious, and social, among others.
HYBRIDIZATION
• The cultural hybridization approach emphasizes the integration of
local and global cultures. Therefore, globalization is considered to
be a creative process which gives rise to hybrid entities that are
not reducible to either the global or the local. A key concept is
“globalization,” or the interpenetration of the global and local
resulting in unique outcomes in different geographic areas.
HYBRIDIZATION
• The process of hybridization is distinguished from the
McDonalization theory.
• The hybridization thesis stands for cultural convergence and
assimilation. The theory advances cultural mixing and integration
without the need to give up one’s identity with cohabitation
expected in the new cross-cultural prototype of difference.
CONVERGENCE
• Cultural convergence is based on the idea that globalization tends to
lead to increasing sameness throughout the world.
• Cultural convergence is the idea that the cultural defense claims of
minority and immigrant defendants are more likely to receive
accommodation when there is convergence between the cultural norms
relied upon by the immigrant or minority defendant and cultural norms.
EFFECTS OF
GLOBALIZATION

• Individual Effects
• Social Effects
• Political Effects
INDIVIDUAL EFFECTS
• Globalization affects both the standard of life and the quality of
life. In many instances, quality of life has improved for those who
live in developing nations. For many developing nations,
globalization has led to an improvement in standard of living
through improved roads and transportation, improved health
care, and improved education due to the global expansion of
corporations.
INDIVIDUAL EFFECTS
• It will affect our identity and all the issues associated with it: our
sense of privacy, our notions of ownership, our consumption
patterns, the time we devote to work and leisure, and how we
develop our careers, cultivate our skills, meet people, and nurture
relationships. It is already changing our health and leading to a
“quantified” self, and sooner than we think it may lead to human
augmentation.
SOCIAL EFFECTS
• Technology advances, particularly block chain, mobile
communication and banking are fuelling economic globalization.
• As the physical, digital, and biological worlds continue to converge,
new technologies and platforms will increasingly enable citizens to
engage with governments, voice their opinions, coordinate their
efforts, and even circumvent the supervision of public authorities.
SOCIAL EFFECTS
• Whether consumers or businesses, physical products and services,
moreover, can now be enhanced with digital capabilities that
increase their value.
• A world of customer experiences, data-based services, and asset
performance through analytics, meanwhile, requires new forms of
collaboration, particularly given the speed at which innovation and
disruption are taking place.
POLITICAL EFFECTS
• Governments will gain new technological powers to increase
their control over populations, based on pervasive surveillance
systems and the ability to control digital infrastructure.
• Globalization also affects how governments throughout the
world create policies affecting areas such as monetary
regulation and trade.
POLITICAL EFFECTS
• The 20th century saw a great rise in governmental and non-
governmental organizations that transcend national political
systems. These organizations include, of course, the United
Nations, International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the
Asian Development Bank and the African Union.
POLITICAL EFFECTS
• Since the end of World War II, the result of global economic
organizations are seen most readily in those industries,
such as the auto and online retailing, that require vast
supply chains.
