Once Upon a Time
Once upon a time, son, And I have learned too
They used to laugh with their hearts To laugh with only my teeth
And laugh with their eyes: And shake hands without my heart.
Ha But now they only laugh with their teeth, I have also learned to say, ‘goodbye’,
Search behind my shadow. When I mean ‘Good-riddance’:
To say ‘Glad to meet you’,
There was a time indeed Without being glad; and to say ‘It’s been
They used to shake hands with their hearts: Nice talking to you’, after being bored.
But that’s gone, son.
Now they shake hands without hearts But believe me, son.
While they left hands search I want to be what I used to be
My empty pockets. When I was like you. I want
To unlearn all these muting things.
‘Feel at home’! ‘Come again’: Most of all, I want to relearn
They say, and when I come How to laugh, for my laugh in the mirror
Again and feel Shows only my teeth like a snake’s bare
At home, once, twice, Fangs!
There will be no thrice –
For then I fond doors shut on me. So show me, son,
How to laugh; show me how
So I have learned many things, son. I used to laugh and smile
I have learned to wear many faces Once upon a time when I was like you.
Like dresses – homeface,
Officeface, streetface, hostface,
Cocktailface, with all their conforming smiles
Like a fixed portrait smile.
