DEFINITION
▪ Monophasic dosage forms refers to a liquid
preparation containing two or more
components in one phase system , it is
represented by a true solution.
▪ A true solution is a homogenous mixture that
is prepared by dissolving a solute in a suitable
solvent .

SYRUPS
▪ Syrups are concentrated aqueous preparations of a sugar or sugar substitute with or
without flavoring agents and medicinal substances .There are two types of syrups
1. MEDICATED
Syrups containing flavoring agents with medicinal substances.
2. FLAVOURED
Used as vehicles for unpleasant tasting medications; the result is medicated syrup.
ELIXERS
▪ These are clear , sweet ,aromatic & hydro
alcoholic liquid dosage for intended for oral use.
They are less sweet in taste and less viscous .
Example –
DRAUGHT
▪ They are liquid dosage forms, intended ti be swallowed in mouth taking as
single dosage
▪ Each dose is issued in separate containers.
▪ Its dosage is very less ie. 10 – 30 ml.
▪ Example -
MIXTURES
▪ It is a liquid preparation including one or more drugs dissolved in aq.
vehicle actually flavored meant for internal administration
LOTION
▪ Lotions are liquid preparation meant for external use, for skin friction
▪ USES
1. Cooling & soothing effect
2. Local protective action
3. Antiseptic action

LINIMENTS
▪ Liniments are liquid preparation meant for external use
▪ They create irritation when applied to affected part
▪ USES
1. Analgesic
2. Counter irritation
3. Penetrate through skin faster
GARGLES
▪ Gargles are aq. sol we use to treat or prevent throat infection. They
are available in conc. forms with direction for dilution with water
before use
▪ They are brought into contact with mucus membrane of threat &
allow to remain in contact with it for few seconds , after that they are
thrown out of mouth
▪ USES
1. They are used to treat soreness and bacterial activity
2. Stimulates the saliva which relieves dryness of throat
MOUTH WASH
▪ They are aq. sol. with pleasant taste in order to be used for cleaning
and deodorizing buccal cavity
▪ Uses
1. Used to remove bad breath
THROAT PAINTS
▪ Throat paints are solution of 1 ml or more API intended for application
of the mucus membrane of throat.
▪ Throat paints are more viscous due to a high content of glycerol,
designed to prolong contact of the medicament with the affected site.
▪ Glycerol also acts as a sweeting agent which masks the bitter taste of
drug.
▪ Glycerol also acts as a humectant which absorbs the moisture content.
▪ Example -
DOUCHES
▪ It’s a medicated sol. for rinsing , cleansing & removing foreign material
from body cavity such as eye , ear ,nasal , & vaginal cavity .
▪ Its available in form of tablet or powder with specific direction for
dissolving specific amount of warm water
▪ Also dispensed as conc sol. with direction to dil it in specific quantity of
warm water before use .
▪ Example –
ENEMA
▪ Enemas are aq. sol. or only sol. or suspension or oil in water type mixture which are
intended to induce in rectum for cleansing , therapeutic or diagnostic purpose.
▪ They have anti inflammatory , anthelmintic & purgative effect.
▪ They are also used for X rays in large intestine .
