Learning Competency:

• Describe the various hazards that may

happen in the event of earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and landslides. S11/12ES If-30

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 2
Review
• What is an earthquake?
• What is volcanic eruption?
• What is landslide?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 3
Sharing of experiences!!!
Tell us your story….
- Earthquake
- Volcanic Eruption
- Landslide / Floods

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 4
Group Activity
Role Play
• Group yourselves into 3.
The 1st group will be assigned to perform
hazards that may happen in the event of
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions (2nd group),
and landslides (3rd group).

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 5
• How did you feel after doing the activity?
• What relevant information, you learned
from the presentation?
• Why is knowing hazards in the event of
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and
landslides important?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 6
• Earthquake
• Landslide/ Floods
• Volcanic Eruptions

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 7
Earthquake Hazards
• events associated with an earthquake that
may cause adverse effects on organisms
and their environment.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 8
• Ground shaking refers to
the vibration of the land
surface during an
earthquake

• Ground
displacement or surface
rupture is the horizontal
or vertical displacement of
the ground surface along
the fault zone.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 9
• Liquefaction is the
transformation of solid
rocks and soil to a
liquid‐like state during
ground shaking.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 10
• Fire is caused by
rupture of gas
lines during
ground shaking
and displacement.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 11
• Tsunami is a set of
long, high ocean
waves caused by
an earthquake or
other disturbance
under the sea.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 12
Volcanic eruption hazards
• events associated
with a volcanic
eruption that may
cause adverse
effects on
organisms and
their environment.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 13
• Lahar is a mixture
of volcanic debris
and water that
flows at the
slopes of the
volcano.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 14
• Pyroclastic fall is a
mass of hot,
dry pyroclastic
material (mixture of
ash and dust) and hot
gases.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 15
• Volcanic gases are
vapors released during
an eruption. Some of
these gases, such as
hydrogen sulfide
(\mathrm{HS}HS) and
sulfur dioxide
({\mathrm{SO}}_2SO2
), are poisonous.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 16
• Tephra falls are
rock fragments and
lava blobs ejected
by a volcano.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 17
Landslide hazards
• events associated
with a landslide that
may cause adverse
effects on
organisms and their
environment.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 18
• Mud flow is the
flow of mud and
rock. It may pick
up trees, houses,
and cars as it
moves down the
slope.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 19
• Earthflow is the
downward flow of
fine-grained
materials, such as
clay, fine sand,
and silt.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 20
• Rock fall is the
sliding, toppling, or
falling of rocks along
a slope. It disrupts
road traffic in
mountainous regions.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 21
APPLICATION
• Create a hazard mapping inside the
school following the hazard mapping guide
given by DRRMC

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 22
ASSESSMENT

You are enjoying your summer vacation at

the beach. Suddenly, you felt the ground moving
because of an earthquake. What should you do?
What are the scenarios that may happen during
and after the earthquake?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 23
ASSIGNMENT!!!
• Get the map of your barangay or
municipality and identify the possible
hazards that may occur in your area in the
case of certain geological events. How will
you prepare for these events?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 24
“We cannot stop natural disasters but
we can arm ourselves with knowledge:
so many lives wouldn't have to be lost if
there was enough disaster
preparedness.”
