WHY IS IT PLANNED IN KOZHIOKODE ?

India is globally the second largest producer of footwear after China and accounts for 13% of
global footwear production of 16 billion pairs. India produces 2065 million pairs if different
categories of footwear .India exports about 115million pairs . The major production centers in
India are Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra ,Uttar Pradesh ,Punjab ,Delhi ,West Bengal and Kerala. In
Kerala the footwear industry has moved on to become a Rs700 crore sector ,producing good
quality and low priced range products to gain a prominent place in the domestic and international
markets .The sector has opened up plenty of employment opportunities for women who have no
previous experiences.90% of work forces in the mechanized sector in South India consists of
women who are trained in the factory.

Kozhikode metropolitan area is the largest urban agglomeration in Kerala and the 185th largest
urban agglomeration in the world. The city currently is the major trade hub of north Kerala with
good connectivity through road, rail and air. As the usual trade items in the such as traditional
tiles ,wood and timber industries slowly shrink in their market opportunities ,entrepreneurs in
Kozhikode are exploring new opportunities in their constant strive to keep up the rich industrial
history of the region of which footwear industry is the most promising one and it is growing at an
exponential pace. Kozhikode is rapidly emerging as a major hub for Indian footwear sector. The
footwear sectors growth is fueled by Kerala state Small Industries Association’s(KSSIA), Footwear
Design Development Centre(FDDC), Confederation of Indian Footwear Industry(CIFI) with
constant assistance and with the backing of the leaders in the industry
Hundreds of footwear manufacturing centers centered at Kozhikode in the Malabar
Region. The footwear market in Kerala is Worth Rs 600 crore annually, and there is a
large scope for local production especially in Kozhikode as it is the second biggest
footwear manufacturing hub in the country after New Delhi . There are more than
200 manufacturing units in the region which directly employees 11,000 workers in
this sector, but due to the death of qualified professionals and technicians ,footwear
of international standards is not being produced which holds the industry back from
expanding further.

The campus was proposed in Kozhikode after witnessing the meteoric rise of the city
in the footwear sector to boost ,promote and train young entrepreneurs in the
industry and to enable the Indian footwear industry to attain international standards
of production. The government also proposed a footwear park adjacent to the
institute for park would feature all the necessary infrastructure for the development
of modern, technology-based footwear industry ,providing better opportunities for
the skilled man power for the development of the sector.

Kozhikode has the highest concentration of footwear manufacturing units ,around

15,000 workers are directly employed in the sector .
The annual turnover is around 15,000 crore.

Sufficient land (20 acres ) is provided which can accomodate 800 students .
