What is UV Light?
Ultraviolet Radiation Definition. Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic

or simply UV. region.

falls on certain materials, it may cause them to fluoresce—i.e., emit
electromagnetic radiation of lower energy, such as visible light. Many insects,
however, are able to see ultraviolet radiation.
 Ultraviolet (UV) light has shorter wavelengths than visible light. Although UV

 UV radiation is present in sunlight, and contributes about 10% of the total
electromagnetic radiation output from the Sun.
 It is also known as UV radiation, ultraviolet light, or simply UV.
 The word "ultraviolet" means "beyond violet".
What is UV wavelength range?

Emissions from the sun

include visible light, heat
and UV radiation.
The UV region covers
the wavelength range 100-
400 nm and is divided into
three bands: UVA (315-400
nm) UVB (280-315 nm)
WHAT IS UV FREQUENCY?

 Ultraviolet (UV) light

falls in the range of the
EM spectrum between
visible light and X-rays.
It has frequencies of
about 8 × 1014 to 3 ×
1016 cycles per second,
or hertz (Hz), and
wavelengths of about
380 nanometers (1.5 ×
10−5 inches) to about 10
nm (4 × 10−7 inches)
USES FOR UV RAYS
 Bright clothing
Certain chemicals can absorb UV radiation and then re-emit it as visible
light. Some washing powders use these to make white material appear whiter in
sunlight. Such chemicals are also used in safety clothing.
 Security marking
Special inks, that are only visible under UV radiation, are used to security
mark expensive items.
 Tanning
UV radiation in sunlight causes skin to tan. Tanning beds imitate sunlight by
emitting artificially-produced UV rays.

 Ultraviolet rays can be used to kill microbes. Hospitals use UV lamps to sterilize
surgical equipment and the air in operating theatres. Food and drug companies
also use UV lamps to sterilize their products.

Advantages of Ultra Violet Radiation

 The process only requires a minimal amount of electricity.

 It is also very environmental friendly. This is because it does not emit any by-
products such as sodium into the environment. Therefore, there are no
chemicals handled.

 The UV system is very cost effective.

 The process also destroys each and every microorganism that is in the
water.

 The water flow in the whole system is just pure.

Disadvantages of Ultraviolet Radiation
 The water must be very clear so that the Ultra Violet radiation can pass
through and destroy the pathogens.

 The process can occur in a place which has no electricity.

 Ultraviolet radiation method is only able to deal with microorganisms, and

that means that if the hard water contains minerals such as magnesium and
calcium, then the rays will not be able to eliminate them.
