LITERAL VS. FIGURATIVE
LANGUAGE
What is LITERAL LANGUAGE?
- It is taking words in their usual or most basic sense
without metaphor or allegory, it means exactly what it says.
- The definitions for words in their literal sense is
precise and uncomplicated and, in dictionary terms, is referred
to as its DENOTATION.
What is Figurative Language?
It is language in which words, phrases, and sentences have
been attributed extraordinary definitions. In dictionary
terms, the variety of meanings acquire in a figurative sense
is called CONNOTATION.

It is a type of comparison between things or objects by using “as” or “like.”
EXAMPLES:
-My heart is like a singing bird.
-They fought like cats and dogs.
-The dog is as smelly as dirty socks.
-Watching the show was like watching grass grow.
-You were as brave as a lion.
A figure of speech that uses extreme exaggeration to make a point or show emphasis.
EXAMPLES:
• I've told you to clean your room a million times!
• It was so cold, I saw polar bears wearing hats and jackets.
• I am so hungry I could eat a horse.
• I have a million things to do today.
• I will run a thousand miles to see you.
Alliteration is a term to describe a literary device in which a series of words begin with the same consonant sound.
The best way to spot alliteration in a sentence is to sound out the sentence, looking for the words with the
identical beginning consonant sounds.
EXAMPLES:
• Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy.
• Can you keep the cat from clawing the couch? It’s creating chaos.
• Fred’s friends fried Fritos for Friday’s food.
• Greedy goats gobbled up gooseberries, getting good at grabbing the goodies.

EXAMPLES:
• The job interview was a rope ladder dropped from heaven.
• Her hair was a flowing golden river streaming down her shoulders.
• The computer in the classroom was an old dinosaur.
• Katie’s plan to get into college was a house of cards on a crooked table.
• He pleaded for her forgiveness but Janet’s heart was cold iron.

thing described, making the description more expressive and interesting.

• Silence your cellphone so that it does not beep during the movie.

• The pigs oinked excitedly.
• The lion’s mighty roar could be heard across the Savannah.
