The Controversy of

Animal Testing
in the Medical Field

Prepared by:

In doing scientific research, researchers use different subjects most commonly animals
especially in doing medical research. Such act being referred to Animal Testing.
Animal Testing
Is also known as animal experimentation. It is the use of animals in scientific research
in developing new products or drugs

 According to data collected by F. Barbara Orlans for her book, In the Name of Science:
Issues Responsible Animal Experimentation, 60% of animals are used in biomedical
research and product safety testing.

 Using the animals in research to test the

safety of products has been a topic of heated
debate for decades up until now, as some
individuals support the use of animals in
research and others are against it.

ANIMALS ARE APPROPRIATE RESEARCH SUBJECTS
BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMILAR TO HUMAN BEINGS
IN MANY WAYS.

Only tests animals that are close to humans in biological sense

The genetics of mice are 98% similar to human.

Humans and animals have the same set of organs, bloodstream, circulatory system and
central nervous system, which is why they are affected with the same diseases and health
condition thus, researchers look at how animals react and be able to make comfortable
prediction about how humans might react.

 As such, researchers do recognize the limitations and differences.

On top of that, animals themselves benefit from the results of animal testing.
THERE IS NO ADEQUATE ALTERNATIVE TO
TESTING ON A LIVING, WHOLE-BODY SYSTEM

 As stated by the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki , it is unethical to

use human in invasive experimentations and put their lives at risks by letting them
volunteer for testing medicines for potential toxicity or side effects, as well as for
manipulating genes.which could result to death.

 Animals make better research subjects than human beings because of their shorter life
cycle. So, the researchers can study the effects of treatments or genetic manipulation over
a whole lifespan which could be infeasible using human subjects.

 In addition, they can continue to conduct experiment across several generations, which
is why lab animals are used for long-term research on cancer.

Testing of animals may seems wrong for some who are
against this idea. But animals are the only alive option to test on since
researchers cannot test the products on humans directly. Consequently,
animal testing cannot be stopped for it has helped us through the
breakthrough in science and technology specifically in the medical field
and cannot be avoided until we find a better, more beneficial and efficient
way to make us much medically progressive.

For now, the use of animals in the medical field is our strongest option.
Without it we would-medically speaking-be
stuck in the Dark Ages.
