Departmental functions
• Logistics department
1.Booking section:
The main function of booking section is to take the goods from the consignor, freight
price is fixed for the goods. The price is done on the basis of weight and space occupied by
the consignment.
2.Delivery section:
All goods collected at different booking office are transported and bought to the
transhipment point. These goods are the separated, sorted and sent to their destinations. The
function of delivery section is to delivery goods to the corresponding consignee.
• Human resource department
It is heart of VRL logistics ltd group. The functions of HR department involves
recruitment, providing salary, bonus, leaves etc and to arrange facilities for PF and ESI for
employees.
• Finance department
It is concerned with the essential financial activity like planning of funds, recording of
transactions and preparing financial statements.
• Maintenance department
The main function of this department is to maintaining the various vehicles. At present
VRL has 4403 own vehicles which includes buses, lorry, mini goods carries etc.
• Complaint department
This department is use to handle and settle the customer complaints. It takes care of
customer problems and customer will be handled efficiently and settled properly of their
satisfaction.
• Legal department
It is one which plays most prominent part in the company. The functional activities
of legal department are settlement of industrial disputes, settlement of workmen
compensation, settlement of accident claims, to avoid the illegal activities in the firm.
• Garage department
This department maintaining stock of all spares, tyres and oil required for the vehicle.
The minimum reorder level depends upon the type of vehicle and availability of spares.
This is being monitored by the garage department.
• Information Technology department:
The function of IT department is to maintain the vehicle tracker application,
consignment delivery application and to develop and maintain the software applications.
• MIS department
VRL has well equipped information system, which gives the information needs for
the company. This department provides required information for all the departments.
Observations
• The process of goods transportation takes place in three steps
i.e. booking, transportation, and delivery.
• The pricing strategy of VRL logistics ltd. (The pricing is done
on the basis of weight and space occupied by the consignment)
• Communication is made through phone and internet facility.
• It is found that organization values their employee’s opinion &
ideas and shares their information with their employer.
• The organization focuses on customer satisfaction and best and
speed service.
• The major advantage is that the company is a single largest
service provider in south India.
SWOT Analysis
STRENGTHS
• The company is having the very good brand image in customers mind.
• The company is having a very Effective internal management system.
• It is having the more network branches compared to the other competitors.
• Very well established networks cover more than 900 branches in 23 states.
• Employees, as well as customer’s suggestions are considered with special care, this made the
company to get loyal customers as well as employees.
WEAKNESS
• VRL logistics ltd can be preferred to serve only domestic market
• Limited market share growth - Being a very competitive market, market share growth
becomes difficult especially considering numerous small and large local competitors.
OPPORTUNITIES
• The GST implementation will lead to give organized better service.
• GST would also provide a big boost for the movement of LTL cargo.
THREATS
• A rise in fuel prices would adversely affect their operations and profitability.
• Their goods and passenger transport business are subject to various taxes, which may
significantly affect their profit.
• Increasing competition due to liberalization.
Suggestion
• The company should focus more on safe handling and
fast service.
• It should emphasize on warehousing facilities
provided.
• They can construct racks to make use of space in the
warehouse.
• They have to purchase more material handling
equipments as the business is growing.
• Transshipment labours should be given sufficient
training to handle the goods.
• The company should build relationship with
industries for more contracts.
