What you mean by Barriers ?
• Barriers means obstacles or huddles.
• Barriers is just like obstacles that prevent
us from completing the specific task.
Barriers in Communication
• As communication is a complex
process, it is necessary to take care of
communication interference and the
barriers in compunction that may
hamper the smooth flow of effective
communication.
• Communication barriers may
defined as the conditions that
interfere with the effective exchange
of ideas and thoughts.

• Communication barriers may


emanate from either from the
sender/receiver side.
A careful analysis of communication barriers reveal that they are generally created by :

 Improper Encoding is a recurrent barriers in the process of communication.
Since there is lack of understanding on the part of receiver, it lead to
confusion and misunderstanding.
 Message should be presented in a linguistic code familiar to one’s audience.
 If audience is not able to follow the language or selection of inappropriate
medium leads to communication breakdown due to confusion or
misunderstanding.
The main kinds of Encoding Barriers are

 The term “bypassing” refers to misunderstanding resulting from missed
meanings because of the use of the abstract words and phrases on which
both senders and receivers do not agree.

 Words means different things to different people. Age, education and


cultural background are the three of the more obvious variables that
influence the language person uses.
For instance, an Indian asked his Arab colleagues why he was a bachelor at the age of
forty. The Arab replied innocent ,”because of dowry....”. The Indian responded, “You
should not have been so greedy.” The Arab was upset and confused because he could
not understand why his Indian friend considered him greedy. There was a
communication breakdown.

“Dowry” for Indian is the money that the groom takes from the family of the bride
while “Dowry” for an Arab is the amount of “mehar” that the groom have to pay to
the father of the bride.
 Different individuals interprets the same communication differently depending
on their experiences.

 The moments you interprets others point of view from your angle, You allow your
prejudices to start working for you.

 Your frame of reference is individual to you as it is based on your experiences,


education , personality and other several elements related to you.

What you see is not always what you get.


 Physical barrier is the environmental and natural condition that act as a barrier
in communication in sending message from sender to receiver.

 When messages are sent by the sender, physical barriers like doors, walls, distance,
noise, climate, etc. do not let the communication become effective

 For example, you are trying to giving presentation in the classroom but the
room temperature is very high and there is no air conditioner in the room. Your
discomfort may cause communication failure because person Who is physically
uncomfortable can be neither a good speaker nor a good listener.
 It can be defined as the interpersonal interaction between members of different
groups, which may differ from each other in respect of knowledge share by their
members. It is depend on body language, beliefs, values, etc.

 It creates a misunderstanding because senders and receivers belongs to different

For example - In America, people shake their hands and even hug each other
But in India hands for join to say Namaskar.
 Any Psychological and Emotional interference can be a prove to be a barrier
to effective communication because it lack of interest and concentration.
 It refers to feeling of sadness ,fear ,anger ,anxiety.
 Communication is a purposeful activity based on rationality and reason and
one must to ensure that one is not emotionally charged
(e.g. very excited/angry/nervous) before one takes part of communication.
 One may feel difficult to concentrate on the content of the message.
