Sensors in IOT

LocationSensor
• communicates with GPS satellites to determine
the location of your phone/tablet
• Returns a user's location in latitude and longitude
degrees
• Some of these sensor types are software based
– IP resolver that provides location information based
on an Internet address
– a mobile phone tower that determines location based
on nearby towers
– a Wi-Fi network location provider that reads location
information from the connected wireless network hub
Motion sensor
• is a device that detects moving objects,
particularly people.
• activating automatic door openers
• commonly used in household motion sensing
devices
• to sense an intruder and send an alert to your
control panel, which alerts your monitoring
center
– movement in your living room, windows or doors
being opened or closed, or a broken window, Contact
Motion Sensors (door/window):
Passive Infrared (PIR)

• used motion in home security systems.

• When your system is armed, your motion
sensors are activated.
• Once the sensor warms up, it can detect heat
and movement in the surrounding areas,
creating a protective “grid.”
• the infrared energy levels change rapidly, the
sensors are tripped.
Light sensors
• able to detect light
• Light sensors detect light density but do not
record images.
• Camera sensor also works on same principal.
• light sensors include
– digital cameras, barcode scanners
ambient light sensor
• is a component in smartphones, notebooks,
other mobile devices, automotive displays and
LCD TVs.
• adjust LCD brightness to save battery power
• It is a photodetector that is used to sense the
amount of ambient light present, and
appropriately dim the device's screen to
match it
Proximity Sensor

• A device that detects the presence or absence of

a nearby object
• detect the presence of nearby objects, even if the
object is not actually touching the sensor
• converts it into signal which can be easily read by
system
• utilize IR beams in order to sense the objects
– reversing car, retail industry, parking availability in
places
– turns off the display to prevent keypad presses and
battery consumption from the display
Accelerometer sensor
• used to determine the position and orientation of
an object.
• dynamic to sense movement or vibrations
• Acceleration is the measurement of the change in
velocity, or speed divided by time
• It can do this in all 3 XYZ axis, or directions,
which are left/right (X), forward/backwards (Y),
and up/down (Z). This is the same part that
smartphones use to tell how you're tilting them.
Gyroscope sensor
• used to detect the orientation of the phone
• It works with an Accelerometer to detect the
rotation of phone and features like tilting
of phone to play racing games enhances the
overall gaming experience.
Temperature sensor
• measure amount of heat energy that allows
to detect a physical change in temperature
• from a particular source and converts the
data for a device or user
– A/C control, refrigerators
– in agriculture, the temperature of soil is crucial for
crop growth
