INTRODUCTION

“teaching materials are tools that can be figuratively cut
up into component pieces and then rearranged to suit the
needs, abilities, and interests of the students in the
course” (Graves, 1991.p.27).

 EFL materials presented in the classroom includes

2 types authentic and non-authentic materials

AUTHENTIC
Definitions

 Richards and Schmidt (2010) define authentic
materials as those materials that were not originally
developed for pedagogical purposes, such as the use of
magazines, newspapers, advertisements, news reports,
or songs. Such materials are often thought to contain
more realistic and natural examples of language use than
those found in textbooks and other specially developed
teaching materials.
Nunan (1989) provides the conventional definition of
authentic texts: he says authentic materials are usually
defined as those which have been produced for purposes
other than to teach language.
2. Types of authentic materials

PRINT AUDITORY

English as a second
language (ESL), adult
secondary education ESL students often use
(ASE), and adult basic authentic auditory
education (ABE) students materials
all can benefit from using
authentic print materials.
Some examples of the many types of authentic
print materials include:

• Utility bills • Traffic tickets

• Packing slips • Greeting cards
• Order forms • Calendars
• ATM screens • Report cards
• ATM receipts • TV guides
• Web sites • Food labels
• Street signs • Magazines
• Coupons • Newspapers
Examples of authentic auditory materials include

• Phone messages • Movies

• Radio broadcasts • Videos and DVDs
• Podcasts • Television programs
• E-books
Newspapers
TV Programs
Menus
Magazines
Internet
Movies
Songs
Etc..
advantages

Authentic materials keep students
informed about what is happening in the
world, so they have an intrinsic educational
value. (Sanderson, 1999).
Students are exposed to real discourse, as in videos of
interviews with famous people where intermediate students
listen for gist.
Authentic materials have a positive effect on learner
motivation.
Authentic materials can produce a sense of achievement
The same piece of material can be used under different
circumstances if the task is different.
Language change is reflected in the materials so that
students and teachers can keep abreast of such changes.
Authentic materials can encourage reading for pleasure
Authentic materials support a more creative approach to
teach
Authentic materials may be too culturally biased, so unnecessarily
difficult to be understood outside the language community.
Too many structures are mixed so lower levels have a hard time
decoding the texts.
Special preparation is necessary which can be time consuming.
Questions note for using
authentic materials

 Do i really need other materilas in this section?
 Where can i find information?
 What kind of exercises can i do?
 Was the activity useful?
 Did my students like it?
 Did achieve my goal?
 Do i have to add, eliminate, correct, clarify,
simplify?
Non

materials

Non authentic • Materials used by
materials teachers or learners to
facilitate the learning
of a language.

• This sort of materials

are proposed, revised
and modified to serve
pedagogical purposes

authentic • videos
materials • cd
• dvd’s
• dictionaries,
• Grammar books
• workbooks
• photocopies
• etc.
advantages

 The language is easier and understandable
 Get clear objectives to develop
 It is adapted for a particular aspect
 Materials are relevant, useful and focused on
what students are learning at the point
disadvantages

 Lack authenticity, they make students to learn
but in difficult and tired way.
Kennedy and Bolitho (1984) consider
simplified texts as a
burden which prevents learners from dealing with
the real world of their subject
 students may lost the motivation to see always
the same materials to study.

Some activities that teacher can design for listening lessons based on a scene
from the American sitcom "The Middle".
Suggested procedures

• Order the expressions / words / sentences
• Complete the gaps
• Watch the scene with sound off
• Try to guess the meaning or the point of the expressions used
You can see there are family listening exercise for students

( ) Every year you make us say these stupid stuff we’re gonna do, but now one
ever does it
( ) We’re really gonna go through these charades again?
( ) We never stick with our resolutions, so what about we picked one for each
other?

how a particular structure differs from the students’ mother tongue.

• Link can easily be with students afterwards

conclusion

 Authentic materials enable learners to interact with
the real language and content rather than the form.
 Learners feel that they are learning a target language
as it is used outside the classroom.
 Authentic materials help students to understand
and motivate and get real, useful and meaningful
language rather than the form
 Using authentic materials in language classes would
be more fruitful forEFL learners than non-authentic
ones.
