Introduction

• Managing diversity is not a new or

futuristic management issue
• Today diversity refers to far more than skin
colour and gender
• One of the most important developments
in the U.S. labour market has been the
growing number of women working
outside the home
U.S. Labour Market

workforce
• Over 60% of all women work outside the home
• Women account for 62% of labour force growth
• Over 40% of today’s workforce consists of
families in which both spouses are working
Gender Issues

• Glass Ceiling
– An invisible barrier that makes it difficult for
women to move beyond a certain level in the
organisational hierarchy
• Sexual Harassment
– Conduct of a sexual nature that has negative
consequences for employment
Masculinity vs. Feminism

• Refers to the distribution of roles

between the sexes
• Masculine societies tend to define very
different roles for men and women
• Hence, opportunities for women in
organisations tend to be limited to some
degree
