FORCE

FREE FALLING BODIES

 The most common force of nature is gravity.

 Applying the formulas on MOTION to freely flowing bodies we can

arrive at the following formulas:
𝑢 = 𝑔𝑡
1
ℎ = 𝑔𝑡
2
Example Problem

 A sea anchor was dropped by a seaman and fell on the sea water
in 5 sec. How high above the sea water was the sea anchor when it
was dropped?
NEWTON’S LAW OF MOTION

 It was Sir Isaac Newton who made a thorough study of motion in the
17th century. Hence he was able to state three laws of motion based
on his studies known as Newton’s Three Laws of Motion.
FIRST LAW OF MOTION:

“ A body will remain at rest or in motion in a straight line and with

constant velocity unless acted upon by a force.”
Inertia

 It is the property of a body that causes it to remain at rest or to

maintain it’s constant velocity.
SECOND LAW OF MOTION:

“The force(F) acting on a body will produce an acceleration (a)

directly proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the
mass(m) of a body.”
Hence,

 Force(F) = mass(m) x acceleration(a)

 What force must be exerted in a 1000 kg boat with a passenger on

it, in order to give it an acceleration of 2m/s2?
Similarly, the force of gravity on an
object is known as its weight.
 Weight (W) = mass(m) x acceleration due to gravity (g)

 Calculate the weight of a new born infant whose mass is 0.19 slugs.
THIRD LAW:

“Whenever a body exerts a force in another body it will exert a force in

another body it will exert a force equal to but opposite the first body.”
NEWTON’S UNIVERSAL LAW OF
GRAVITATION:
 “The force of attraction of two masses is directly proportional to the
product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square
of the distance between them”

𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐺 𝑥 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑚1 𝑥𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠(2)

 𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝐹 =
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 (𝑑 2 )
