 PURPOSE: ORGANIZES AND DEFINES THE
TOTAL SCOPE OF PROJECT
 WBS DEFINES THE “WHAT” OF THE PROJECT.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO ACCOMPLISH IN
THE PROJECT IS DISPLAYED IN A SINGLE,
EASY TO UNDERSTAND CHART. THE PURPOSE
OF THIS CHART IS TO BREAK DOWN COMPLEX
ACTIVITIES INTO SMALLER, MORE
MANAGEMENT CONSTITUENTS.

Budget for building design and construction projects

A budget is a statement of the amount of money that is

available to spend over a period of time, or on a specific
thing, such as a building. It may include an outline plan for
how that money will be spent, and a breakdown of the items
it will be spent on.

Budgets for construction projects help determine what is

affordable and should be set as early as possible. It is
important that they are based on evidence and are realistic.
COST BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE

The Cost Breakdown Structure can be

developed based on the work breakdown
structure (WBS) and can be used to
allocate costs to each part of the building
project. The WBS and CBS provide a
baseline for cost management of the
project during construction.
WHAT IS CONSTRUCTION COST?
Expenses incurred by a contractor for
• Labor
• Material
• Equipment
• Financing
• Service utilities etc.

• Plus overhead and contractors profit. Cost such as that of

land, architectural design, consultant and engineers fee are
not construction cost.
PROCESS OF COST BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE
• first step is to establish the cost
structure -- that is, to gather all the
information you need to understand the
elements involved and what drives the
costs of those elements.
• Second, check that the offers received
for the elements are consistent -- that is,
do some price comparisons and try to
figure out the reasons for variance.
• Third, negotiate based on your findings,
and follow up with additional
negotiations, analyses and management
of the factors that impact cost
fluctuation.
Uses

Cost breakdowns are useful in justifying the price charged to

the client and keeping sellers and providers accountable. If the
client doesn't know exactly what the total for a good, service
or package will be, he can estimate the total by looking at the
individual elemental costs. Knowing how the total price breaks
down is also a benefit in comparing prices and negotiating
better rates.
