Objectives

 Increase durability of bicycle by using shaft.

 Increase power transmission efficiency of the bicycle.
 Gear changing mechanism
History of Bicycle

1493 Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches

In 1823,The German Baron invented
In 1864 , bicycle model with larger front wheel
Chainless Bicycle

The first shaft drives for in 1890

by Walter Still man.
Early problems in chainless
bicycle
Shaft Driven Bicycle
 A chainless bicycle is a bicycle that transmits power to the driven
wheel through a mechanism other than a metal chain.
Major parts

Drive shaft
Ball Bush bearing
Face gear
Sprocket
Ratchet
Drive Shaft

 Two hollow pipes

power transmission
Gear changing mechanism
Ball bushing bearing

 Smooth movement
 Linear motion.
Face Gear

 Attached with crank of pedal

 Mesh with bearing
Sprocket

 Attached with hub

 Mesh with bearings
 Variable number of teeth
Ratchet

 Allows continuous rotary motion in only one direction

Calculation of face gear

 No of driver teeth = 50
 No of driven teeth =10
 Gear ratio = no of driver teeth/no of driven teeth
 Gear ratio = 50/10=5:1
 N = 100 rpm
 Pitch = 13mm
 Rpm of driven =gear ratio × no of driver rpm
 Rpm of driven = 5 × 100 = 500 rpm
Calculation of Shaft
 Maximum torque applied on bicycle = (Mass of rider x g) x Length of the
pedal lever [N-m]
 T=70 x 9.8188 x 0.175
 T=120.17-Nm
 Calculate Rated power (PR) = 2πNT / 60
 P=2*3.14*120*120.17/60
 P=1509.33 WATT
APPLICATIONS

 It is used for racing purpose.

 Also used for off-road riding.
 For cycling purpose.
ADVANTAGE

 Less jamming.
 Less friction
 No chain bite
 Low maintenance cost
Result

 Rpm of rear wheel = 240

 Rpm to linear distance = rpm x 3.14 x Dia. Of wheel
 Rpm to linear distance = 240 x 3.14 x 0.6m = 452m
CONCLUSION

 Approximately speed 25 km/h

 Gear changing mechanism
Future Recommendations

 Design the parts and compare the results

 Minimum the cost of project
