What the language is about
ILOKANO
- Iloko is part of the Philippine branch of Malayo-Polynesian languages
- About 10 million people in the Philippines, mainly in the northwest of Luzon
island, and as far south as Mindanao speak the language
- There is a significant number of Iloko speakers’ in different parts of the world
- Also known as Ilokano, Ilocano, Iluko, Iloco and Iloko, the language is called
Samtoy by the Iloko people, a contraction of the Iloko phrase “saö mi ditoy”,
meaning "our language here."

- Ilocano has loanwords also from Min Nan Chinese, Malay, Sanskrit,
Arabic, Tamil, Persian, and other Austronesian languages.

-Historically, Ilocano has only 3 vowels and this reality is still evident until
today as the sounds of e and i and o and u' often merges.
Now, ilokano has 5 or 6 vowels and 20 consonants.

A person is expected to overcome life's challenges through his or

Although Ilocanos are group-oriented, they also value a certain individualism (agwayas).

Filipino pattern. The father is the formal head of family.

Ilocanos, like all Filipinos, feel their government is corrupt.

Almost all farmers (the major occupation) own the land they till, except for those who are tenants of farms

Importance of Ilokano
in Filipino Psychology
Psyche and mentality or culture in general, of a group of people, are usually manifested
in their language. The Ilokano language’s structure, semantics, and deliverance of speech
offers a glimpse of the aforementioned characteristics, therefore contributing in the
development of SikoPil.
