Before 1510
• Yusuf Adil Shah built castle on the river bank [1500].
• That time the place was filled with marshy lands and
fishermen huts .

In 1750’s
• Viceroy shifts to renovated adilshahs castle
• The moat in south developed to motor able road .
• Settlement pattern originating in fountainhas.

PLANNING CONCEPTS
• Portuguese colonial settlements were located in key coastal
locations ,either to service and secure the sea lanes or to
tap important sources of commerce .
• Whenever possible they were built on hilly land ,thus
maintaining the castrensian tradition of defence on high
ground that dated to pre roman times
• The settlements were basically defensive nuclei, adapted to
morphology of the land ,their main purpose was the control
of territory .when fortified places were associated with
commercial activites on the seashore or on the margin of a
river ,they were organized on two levels ,

rain water harvesting systems in all other government /authority
premises.
