An Author has an intended audience when he
or she is writing a text.
A reader can tell to whom a text is written based
on the following factors:
Vocabulary words
Length of the sentences
Nature of the topic
The way the topic is presented
Things To Consider When You Assess A Text For Its Intended Audience:
Gender for whom the text is written
• some text are gender sensetive. The authors main goal is to reach a specific
gender.
 Age level
• some text are written for young children , some for teenagers some for adults.
 Grade Level
• In academe some textbook are classified according to grade level
Social Position/Status
• Some text target status or position for example glossy expensive
magazines target the wealthy while tabloid targets the masses
Specific Profession
• Some published materials cater for any practicing profession eg. Hospitality industry
(hotel,restaurants, travel ageencies)
 Distinguish words that create a positive ,
negative, or neutral tonee in written text
 Explain what tone a written text sends
 Evaluate personal experiences that may
influence
A personal point of view to a certain societal
issue
 Synthesize cultural exposures(or lack of it) to
determine the limitations of one’s point of
view.
 Relate how an author of a text may also
have perssonal expperiences/cultural
expossures that might affect his tone.
Get a partner and say ,” That’s okay”. Say this in the different
ways that render varied emotionsSuch as being JOYFUL,
DESPERATE, OR CASUAL.

Author’s Tone and
Point of View
Tone in writing can also affect your audience.
Be careful on how you deliver your message even in writing.
Tone in writing means the author’s attitude toward
the topic or issue.
Tone of the authors choice of word will tell the audience
if it has a positive,Negative or neutral point of view.
 When a word suggest lacking of positive qualities
Then its negative, if it shows postive atmosphere or
Qualities then it’s positive if its in between its neutral.

Complaint-Negative
Increase- positive
Decrease – negative
Balance- neutral
