Transportation

the movement of people or

goods from one place to
another.
• BRIEF HISTORY OF TRANSPORTATION
Early Man

• Walked
• Dragged, rolled, or pushed
what he or she needed to
transport
• Alone or as a group
• Early “roads” were worn
paths
First Vehicle

• sled / sledge
• Use to carry goods or products that being
pulled by a domestic animal.

development of wheeled vehicles.
First Roads

• Mesopotamia
• Built/ created hard
surfaces for travel
purposes
• Most likely packed
material, soil, etc.

Reasons for Travel

• To look for “greener pastures”

• Trade
• Military movement – made possible by the
horse
Past Mode of Transport

Transportation in the past mostly occurred on land and
sea. But even at early times, easier and faster
transportation was facilitated with the help of simple
technology. It was mainly characterized with manual
mechanism, meaning it needs human intervention to
function. Vehicles with wheels and watercraft that are
made of durable materials are already present to
provide safety in carrying people and delivery of goods.
One downside is that it only has a small-volume
capacity, so efficiency cannot be fully realized.
Present Mode of
Transport

With the discovery of fuel and invention of machine
or motor mechanism paved the way for a faster
transportation in the present setting. Larger volume
of people and goods can be accommodated with
much less travel time and minimized costs,
providing convenience and economic benefit at the
same time. Concrete examples of this are trucks
and rail transport, water travel by cargo ships and
flights with aircrafts.

Future Mode of Transport

• This will be the most advanced form of

transportation. It can provide transport at a great
speed coupled with well-developed features that
promotes safety and ease of travel. Due to the
increase of mobility, current transport technologies
can be saturated. Studies of Grubler and
Nakicenovic claim that maglev and hypersonic
aircraft are two possible candidates, so the
presence of wheels will be diminished.
