What is Contemporary Arts?

• It is not the same as Modern Art


• It means “Current”, “Now”, and “The Present”
• It is more on experimenting arts
• It is not just contained in –ism; cubism, symbolism,
futurism and others
• It include drawing, painting and sculpture
• Started in 1970’s until today
• Performing art, Video art, Plant art, Installation art,
Visual art
• Focus on Social issues
• In its most basic sense, the term contemporary
art refers to art—namely, painting, sculpture,
photography, installation, performance, and video
art—produced today.
Contemporary Philippine Artists
Victorio Edades – was the first to break the rules
of art.
Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco and Galo Ocampo – were
influenced by Western artist. Abstraction, expressionism,
and surrealism were evident in their paintings.

• A form of art that uses any medium to signify the
artist’s idea, sentiment, and imagination.
• The visual arts are art forms such as painting,
drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics,
photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and
architecture. Many artistic disciplines
(performing arts, conceptualart, textile arts) involve
aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other
types.

Applied Arts
• The term "applied art" refers to the application (and
resulting product) of artistic design to utilitarian
objects in everyday use.
• The applied arts are the application of design and
decoration to everyday objects to make them
aesthetically pleasing. The term is applied in
distinction to the fine arts which aims to produce
objects which are beautiful and/or provide
intellectual stimulation.
Performing Arts
• The performing arts range from vocal and instrumental
music, dance and theatre to pantomime, sung verse and
beyond.
• Performing arts are a form of art in which artists use
their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to convey
artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is
when artists use paint, canvas or various materials to
create physical or static art objects. Performing arts
include a range of disciplines which are performed in
front of a live audience.
