LoRa overview

What is LoRa ?  ..
• Low power wide area network (LPWAN)
- LPWAN is a type of wireless telecommunication network designed to allow long range
communications at a low bit rate
- LPWAN networks are optimized for good coverage: large distance and good indoor penetration,
Power consumption of devices is minimized, Data rates are vey slow (< 1 kbps) and delays are big
- Typically most of the time devices are unreachable from the network side (radio is off)
- LPWAN networks are suitable for IoT devices like sensors operated on a battery
- LPWAN technology examples:
• LoRa (proprietary network protocol)
• NB-IoT (LTE based)
• EC-GSM (GSM based)

LoRa overview

• What is LoRa ?
- LoRaWAN, or shortly LoRa, is a low power wide area wireless network technology developed by
Semtech
• LoRa is suitable for applications which have
- Need to send very low amounts of data infrequently, e.g. some bytes once per hour
- No need for guaranteed message delivery and good tolerance for delays
- Rather stationary devices, i.e. no need for handovers to guarantee continuous data connection
when the device is moving
- Good examples are water and electricity meters
