Last week in tech: Apple's iPhone 11, Land Rover's
new Defender, and Nintendo's weird controller
Nothing dominates a week of tech news
quite like an iPhone launch event. This week,
Apple unleashed a bevy of new products,
including the iPhone 11 (which comes in
standard and Pro versions), as well as the
Apple Watch 5, a new $329 iPad, and details
about its upcoming services like Apple TV+
and Apple Arcade. You can catch up on all
the specifics in our event post.
Four of the best printers for your home office

The Brother Laser Printer is a solid option if you’re looking for a basic black and
white printer and don’t need a scanner (you can always use your phone). It’s not
too bulky or delicate and can print double-sided. The standard cartridge (which
comes separately) will print a whopping 1,200 pages. If you just need to print
boarding passes and work documents, this is a good bet.
Sonos Move speaker review: Great sound in a semi-
portable package

On-paper, the Sonos Move speaker doesn’t make a ton of sense. It’s a portable speaker that weighs six pounds
and promises just 10 hours of battery life—when some of its competition claim more than double that number. At
10 inches tall and six-inches around, it’s too big to easily stuff into a typical day bag or backpack. And it costs
$400, which is extremely high if you’re only comparing it to other Bluetooth speakers Listen to music on the Move,
however, and its purpose becomes much clearer. Inside your house, the Move works just as you’d expect with a
Sonos product. It connects to networks and devices easily to a , it sounds great (more on that in a moment), and it
even looks good in a distinguished way that eschews some of the loud graphic styling and flashing UFO lights
some other companies seem to love putting on their portable speakers.
QLED 8K, the Next Generation of TV: Here’s Why

Seconds after I posted a picture of Samsung’s 85-inch 8K TV on Twitter from IFA

in Berlin, the haters came raining down on me with comments about how silly 8K
was and conspiracy theories about planned obsolescence. Later, I made my case
for the new technology in an op-ed entitled “8K is the next big thing in TV. Get
over it,” and you as you can imagine, the response was similar.
Facebook's new Portal video chat devices are smaller,
cheaper, and facing stiffer competition
This morning, Facebook announced updates to itsPortal line of video chat devices
and dropped the prices on its existing gadgets. The Portals, for the most part,
provide a permanent video chat hub integrated with some voice assistant features.
The line debuted last year, but it landed hot on the heels of some of the
company's biggest privacy scandals. They were also rather pricey. The $199
standard model with a 10-inch screen wasn't a bad deal, but the luxurious Portal+,
which added fancy features like a rotating base and face tracking to follow you
around as you chat, demanded a high price tag of $349. And with recent additions
to the video chat/smart screen space from Google and Amazon, we could be
getting closer to widespread adoption.

Mass extinctions made life on earth more diverse-

Giving legal rights to nature could reduce public
health threats like toxic algae
Toxic outbreaks are caused by nature and the laws to protect
them can prevent this.August and September are peak
months so right now is the time where these laws should be
put in place.
This distant world is a lot like Earth, but you wouldn't
want to live there
Telescopes hunting for flickering, wobbling stars have located more than 4,000 potential exoplanets in
recent decades, some of whichorbit in the not-too-cold, not-too-hot zone around their host star where
water would have a shot at staying liquid. Others have even been found to harbor actual molecules of
H2O. The exoplanet K2-18b, however, is the first to check both boxes, according to two studies published
this week. Unfortunately, a few other decidedly unearth-like characteristics make K2018b an improbable
home for life as we know it. But the discovery represented
