CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL

What is corrosion?
 Corrosion may be defined as a destructive phenomena, chemical
or electrochemical, which can attack any metal or alloy through
reaction by the surrounding environment and in extreme cases may
cause structural failure. Corrosion can be also defined as the
deterioration of material by reaction to its environment.
What causes corrosion?
 In industrial environments, uncontrolled humidity and corrosive
gases are the primary causes of corrosion. Condensation of water
vapor on metal surfaces and corrosive gases such as ammonia,
chlorine, hydrogen oxides, sulphur oxides etc. can result in
corrosion of electronic equipment, rusty bolts and corroded parts.
Sustained exposure to humid conditions in combination with
polluted air increases corrosion rate and can deteriorate costly &
sensitive equipment.
Importance of Corrosion Studies

The importance of corrosion studies is two folds. The first is

economic, including the reduction of material losses resulting from
the wasting away or sudden failure of piping, tanks, metal
components of machines, ships, hulls, marine, structures…etc. The
second is conservation, applied primarily to metal resources, the
world’s supply of which is limited, and the wastage of which
includes corresponding losses of energy and water resources
accompanying the production and fabrication of metal structures.
Electrochemical nature of aqueous corrosion
Aqueous corrosion is an electrochemical reaction of materials due to
a wet environment, resulting in the deterioration of the material and
its vital properties. In aqueous corrosion, the reaction rate depends
on: Material's ion concentration. Electrolyte reactivity. Ambient air
pressure.a
Technology areas where corrosion plays an
important role include:
 Energy Production
 Industries
 Transportation
 Water distribution and sewerage, & etc
Corrosion rate determinates
1.More the reactivity of metal, the more will be the possibility of the metal
getting corroded.
2.The impurities help in setting up voltaic cells, which increase the speed
of corrosion
3. Presence of electrolytes in water also increases the rate of corrosion
4. Presence of in natural water increase rusting of iron.
5.When the iron surface is coated with layers of metals more active than
iron, then the rate of corrosion is retarded.
6. A rise in temperature (with in a reasonable limit) increases the rate of
corrosion.
Galvanic cell and concentration cell corrosion

Galvanic Cell Corrosion

is a process that degrades metals electrochemically. This corrosion
occurs when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in
the presence of an electrolyte, such as salt water, forming a
galvanic cell with H2 formation on the more noble metal.
Concentration Cell Corrosion
Usually forms in cracks and crevices, metal to metal joints, behind
or under gaskets, sealants, surfaces. The cause of thus type of
corrosion is an imbalance of oxygen and ions in electrolytes that
tend to concentrate under the surface of joint or foreign material.
Methods of Stopping & Preventing Metal
Corrosion
Ways to prevent corrosion:
 Turn to non-corrosive metals such as aluminum and stainless steel.

 Keep the area around the metal surface dry.

 Use drying agents and moisture barrier products.

 Make sure underground piping is laid in a layer of backfill, such as limestone.

 Make sure any electrical components are cleaned regularly

 A coating of grease or oil maintained on a metal surface.

 Painting is another method of preventing metal corrosion

 Carbon fiber coating is another excellent method of preventing the corrosion of metals.

Following these simple steps can add a lot of life to metal and stop the corrosion of metals in their
tracks. Keep in mind that all metal requires maintenance. Use these methods frequently to
prevent corrosion of metals.
