Summary
At shouldice hospital only external type of abdominal jermoas were
repaired while internal type were not treated. The hospital employed 12 full
time surgeons, 7 part time assistant surgeons, and one anesthetist. Each
operation teasm required a surgeon, an assistant surgeon, a scrub nurse,
and a circulation nurse. The operating load varied from 30 to 36 operations
per day.
The hospital was operated on a non profit basis and the clinic on a for
profit basis. Dr shouldice and mrs w. Urquhart, his sister, each owned 50%
of each and the hospital relied entirely on word of mouth advertising.
When asked about major questions confronting the management of the
hospital, dr. shouldice cited a desire to seek a ways of increasing hospital’s
capacity, while at the same time maintaining control over the quality of the
service delivered, the future role of government in the operations of the
hospital, the use of the shouuldice name by potential competitors, and the
selection of the next chief surgeon.

 The abdominal wall consists of skin, fatty tissue, and muscle.
The intestines are protected by the abdominal wall. A hernia
occurs when there is a weakness in the muscle. This can lead
to a widening gap. Portions of intestine can get caught in the
gap. Over time, the herniated intestine can become larger. It
can twist and cut off blood supply.
 The only way to fix a hernia is with surgery. Hernia surgery
repairs the intestine, which involves reducing the hernia. It also
restores function to the muscle layer. The muscle gap is closed
to prevent hernias from recurring. Often a mesh is used to
strengthen the area. Scar revisions can sometimes be
performed.

5 lessons from chapter 5 of the
textbook (strategic capacity
 management)
Capacity is the “ability to hold, receive, store, or accommodate”.
 Consideration in changing capacity – (maintaining system balance,
frequency of capacity additions and use of external sources of
operations)
 Capacity planning in services versus manufacturing. Service
capacity is more time and location dependent, and is subject to
more volatile demand fluctuations
 Service type companies require that capacity be available
immediately and if possible, located near the customer resides. For
e.g. banks
 Firms that offer services often need to deal with dramatic changes in
customer demand over time.
