Organizational structure
ACCORDING TO MINTERZBERG (1972): ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE IS THE
FRAMEWORK OF THE RELATIONS ON JOBS, SYSTEMS, OPERATING PROCESS,
PEOPLE AND GROUPS MAKING EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS.
Consequences of poorly designed
organizational structure

 1.lack of coordination
 2.Excessive conflicts.
 3. Unclear roles.
 4.lack of productivity .
 5.Proliferation of extra organizational divisions or units.
 6.E.t.c
Lack of coordination or team work

 Bad organizational structure does little to foster the concept of teamwork.

 Departments may be unwilling or unable to cooperate with each other,
and workers within departments may not feel a sense of solidarity.
 Workers may focus on their individual tasks and not offer assistance to
others unless directed to do so by a supervisor.
EXCESSIVE CONFLICTS

 Some organizations use a reporting structure where an employee has to

answer to several bosses.
 The employee can easily become confused by receiving a variety of
messages, directives and being given conflicting instructions.
 Employees may play one boss against the other, which can ultimately
lead to friction between the bosses
Unclear roles

 While scope creep is inevitable in small business and startup environments,

it’s imperative to establish clear roles and responsibilities for each person in
your company.
 If responsibilities are constantly in flux in your organization, take some time
to understand why.
 In addition to a rapidly changing work environment, unclear roles can
stem from overlap in management, which leads to confusion about
reporting structure and what one person’s job responsibilities entail.
Lack of innovation

 According to C. Lin (2006), the word innovation is originated from Latin

word, innovare which means “to make something new”
 Companies with bad organizational structure are often slow to innovate
even if new ideas does exist but due to poor communication the idea will
never reaches the right source for development and implementation.
 Consequently, workers who come up with new ideas may keep them to
themselves or take them to a new employer.
Poor Customer Service

 Organizations with poor organizational structure may not be able to

provide efficient customer service, which can eventually lead to a loss of
business.
 This can occur frequently in larger companies where there is little
interaction between departments. A customer who calls in with a problem
may be handed off from department to department because no one is
sure who is the right to handle the situation.
Proliferation of extra organizational
divisions or units

 The division of labor creates separate units for marketing, sales,

accounting, information technology, and so on.
 The method for dividing tasks up within a company may be distributed
between project teams, groups, or departments.
Low Productivity

 Productivity is a key element for almost every business.

 Low productivity levels can indicate a problem in an organization’s
structure.
 Through inefficient resource allocation, poor vertical communication and
employee empowerment constraints, employees may not have the
proper environment to complete their work assignments in an efficient
manner.
