Chemical and Physical changes

Keywords: Physical change,

Chemical change

Starter: Which of
these changes are
chemical and physical?
LOb: Describe chemical reactions.

Learning Outcomes:
• Explain the difference between physical and
chemical change.
Keywords: • Use observations to decide whether a chemical
chemical, physical reaction or physical reaction has taken place.

Did you know… When nitrogen

dioxide is heated it turns from a
brown gas into two colourless gases.
When cooled it forms nitrogen
dioxide again.

Mixtures
To know the difference between a chemical and physical change

Can you get back what you started with?

(Reversible)
Or is it changed forever? (Irreversible)

I think...because... I agree because...

I disagree because... Also...
What about... In addition...
Materials can change in different ways.

Melting is an example of a physical change.

KEY
POINT

Physical changes can be undone quite

easily.
Burning is an example of a chemical change.

KEY
POINT

Chemical changes are harder to

undo.

Often chemical changes cause a

change in colour.
Experiment
• You are going to do a practical to investigate chemical and physical changes.

• Move around the 5 stations, follow the instructions and make observations of what
you can see.
Results
• Share your results with the class.
5 October, 2019 Review your learning

Plenary
• Group the cards together if they
describe a chemical or physical change.

• Think about your observations from the

experiment to help you.

• When you have checked your answers

glue the cards in your books.

Write a WILT for your partner in their

planner.
Self- Assess

Physical Change Chemical Change

• Can easily be undone. • Cannot easily be undone.
Answers

• No new material is formed. • New materials formed that are

different to the starting
materials
• Change in state
• Colour change

• Bubbles given off

• Heat or light given off
