Non-verbal communication in the
workplace.
- Is the transmission of information in addition to words
in a communication.
- However, other messages may be unintentional, such
as:
- A. The wearer of conservative suits may appear
unapproachable when that was not his intention.
- B. The wearer of a low-cut blouse may or may not want
her coworkers to find her sexy.
Forms of non-verbal
communication:
 Body language
 Facial expression
 Posture
 Eye contact
 Gestures
 Signs
 Clothing and other accessories such as brief cases, safety
glasses, etc.
 Office décor
 Tone of voice
 Touch
 Physical Space
The flow of communication in work
organizations.
 A. Downward – consists of communications sent from
management to workers.
 B. Upward – Information flow from the lower levels of a
heirarchy to the upper levels.
 C. Lateral/Horizontal – Communication that takes place at
same levels of heirarchy in an organization.
 D. Diagonal – Communication that takes place between a
manager and employees of other workgroups.
 E. External – Communication that takes place between a
manager and external groups.
 F. Grapevine – The informal communication network
within an organization.
